We have a fantastic opportunity at HMP Durham to join the Novus education team as our Construction Teacher on a permanent, part-time basis working 22.2 hours a week. At Novus we work with passion, care, and commitment to create the foundations for change. For almost 30 years we have been helping men, women, and children of all ages and abilities, in prison settings across England and Wales, to take new directions.
What the role entails
As a teacher, you will develop and deliver high-quality, learner-focused education to meet contractual requirements and standards. You will deliver practical training in various construction trades, including Painting & Decorating, Plumbing, Joinery, and Bricklaying. Working with a group of up to 15 learners, your role will involve engaging and motivating individuals to develop their skills, knowledge, and confidence in the construction field. We are recruiting for a Multi-Skills Construction Teacher or a Qualified Construction Tradesperson.
What we need from you
In order to be successful in the role of Teacher, you will need:
1. A teaching qualification or subject specialist qualification at Level 4 (Level 5 - new standards) with a commitment to obtain the relevant outstanding Level 4 (Level 5 - new standards) qualification within a specified time scale (required).
2. Hold at least a Level 2 qualification in Literacy and Numeracy.
3. Track record of effective teaching in subject specialism.
4. Experience working within any one of the following construction fields (Bricklaying, Joinery, Painting & Decorating).
Responsibilities
1. Deliver high-quality, hands-on training sessions in multiple construction trades.
2. Assess learner needs and develop individualised learning plans.
3. Create a positive and inclusive learning environment that encourages student engagement and participation.
4. Monitor learner progress and provide constructive feedback.
5. Support learners in achieving their learning aims.
6. Stay up to date with curriculum changes and best practices in functional skills education.
