We are seeking to appoint a Research Associate on a full-time appointment for 18 months to join the project “Gender inequalities: the role of social networks in gendered interactions and social structures” funded by ESRC responsive mode: secondary data analysis. The main goal of this project is to identify the social network mechanisms linking gendered micro-interactions to the macro-inequalities that systematically frame opportunities and constraints for men and women. Specifically, we aim to: observe if gender impacts how people form, maintain and dissolve social networks in similar manners, and if so, if they obtain similar outcomes (popularity, status, power, economic returns, inclusion, but also social isolation and stigmatization). explore if gendered social network formations and outcomes vary depending on the type of relationship, for example negative and ambivalent relationships. determine if gendered network mechanisms and outcomes vary depending on the context in which they operate, i.e., national domains and social contexts – schools, organizations, etc. where gender cultures and policies may differ. The project will capitalise on the large amount of data publicly accessible for which the information on social networks and the characteristics of individuals (i.e. gender) embedded in these networks is available. We want to focus on four research domains: Personal networks over the lifetime School networks Organizational networks Covert and Illicit networks The Research Associate will have expertise in statistical analysis of social networks like multilevel analysis, Exponential Random Graph Models, Linear and logistic mixed effects regression models, Autologistic Actor Attribute Models, and will be able to conduct meta-analysis of their results to test if results distribute heterogeneously, i.e. in different countries, affluent vs deprived schools and neighbourhoods, or across different type of licit and illicit organizations. The appointment will start on the 1st of April 2025 and the Research Associate will be based in the Department of Sociology.
