Applications are invited to the post of Urology Clinical Fellow Registrar based at Ashford and St Peter’s Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.
This post is intended for someone who has completed basic surgical training with attainment of MRCS. This post is an ideal opportunity for the successful candidate to gain more experience in urology and improve their competitiveness at National Selection for higher training.
Main duties of the job
The department of Urology at Ashford and St Peter’s is a friendly and dynamic one. There will be regular theatre lists with exposure to core and general urology, laparoscopic upper tract surgery as well as PCNL. The successful applicant will also have opportunity to develop skills in local anaesthetic trans-perineal prostate biopsy, urodynamics, transurethral laser ablation of bladder tumours and ESWL. The successful applicant will be supported to develop audit projects, give presentations and take part in educational activities in order to enhance their CV.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
1.1 Department Objectives
We aim to provide a high-quality patient experience and an excellent place to work for all staff. We believe that the key to improved patient and staff experience is a high quality, efficient and patient-centred pathway, in which the patient sees the ‘right doctor, first time’.
1.2 Service Developments
Our clinical strategy is to deliver high quality pro-active urological elective and emergency care for our patients.
The post holder will:
* be 1 of 8 middle grades (2 KSS higher urology trainees, 6 clinical fellows) in the Urology team at Ashford and St. Peter’s Hospital.
* be expected to participate in the middle grade 1:8 24-hour non-resident on-call. This may be subject to change to adapt to the needs of the service.
* always be supported by a consultant on-call who will undertake daily ward rounds and support the junior team in managing inpatients.
* be expected to work flexibly to support the service. This will include regular theatre sessions, flexible cystoscopy lists, and working as the ‘registrar of the week’ directly supporting the junior team and managing inpatients.
* form part of the Uro-oncology MDT and will be expected to prepare and present cases at the weekly meeting which will be used as an educational and development opportunity.
* be expected to work with other speciality teams across both Ashford and St. Peter’s Hospitals to provide an efficient and effective service for inpatients, day-case and outpatients care.
1.3 LEARNING, DEVELOPMENT AND RESEARCH
* The post holder is expected to undertake clinical audit and Quality improvement projects and ensure that agreed actions required as indicated are implemented. These projects will be presented at a local level and opportunity to present at national and international conferences will be encouraged.
* There will be opportunity to attend and learn extra skills according to the Clinical Fellow’s professional development needs. These may include transperineal prostate biopsy under local anaesthetic, urodynamics, ESWL, or transurethral laser ablation of bladder tumours.
* Training will be provided according to the Clinical Fellow’s level and experience in preparation for higher surgical training applications.
