A leading public sector organisation is undergoing a major transformation of its digital and engineering capabilities. As part of this shift, they are hiring a DevOps-minded software engineer — someone who can contribute across software, infrastructure, and platform engineering.
This role starts with hands-on infrastructure work: specifically, helping to clear a critical backlog of Linux upgrades alongside another engineer. But that’s just the first chapter.
From there, the role evolves — depending on the person’s strengths — into either:
* Platform Engineering: owning infrastructure as code, containerisation, CI/CD pipelines, cloud hosting, and shaping operational best practices.
This is one of the first hires into a team led by a newly appointed Head of Engineering, brought in to bring engineering in-house and modernise the tech stack. There is huge scope for influence, and the ideal candidate will be someone who sees problems and enjoys fixing them at the root.
Responsibilities
* Support the Linux upgrade programme (short-term, critical project)
* Build and maintain in-house software solutions (React, Java, Python)
* Help establish platform engineering foundations: Kubernetes, IaC, CI/CD
* Influence decisions on tooling, architecture, hosting, and best practices
* Contribute to a culture of engineering excellence and in-house capability building
Requirements
* 3–7 years of experience in software engineering, DevOps, or platform engineering
* Strong Linux skills, especially around server upgrades and admin
* Solid scripting experience (e.g. Python, Bash)
* Exposure to cloud platforms (Azure preferred), infrastructure as code, CI/CD
* Preference for candidates with a Computing degree or technical apprenticeship
* A strong "builder" mindset – enjoys improving systems and challenging outdated practices
Ideal Background
This role is particularly well-suited to candidates from commercial engineering environments (e.g. tech consultancies, betting firms, media/streaming companies) where modern infrastructure and digital engineering are the norm. Think fast-moving, product-led cultures where engineers ship, automate, and refine — and who now want to apply that thinking in a public sector setting.
What’s On Offer
* Competitive salary, one of the best pension schemes available and a highly flexible working model - 1 day in the office per week.
* The chance to build and influence from the ground up — the platform strategy, tooling, CI/CD, and more
* Real technical ownership in a purpose-led organisation
* A mix of hands-on coding and infrastructure work
* A transformation journey backed by leadership — the Head of Engineering has a mandate for change
* Flexibility to shape your role toward software or platform over time
Apply now to join an engineering team with a deep sense of mission, helping deliver systems that impact people’s lives in very real ways.
