Managing Quantity Surveyor – North East

Murphy is currently recruiting for a Managing Quantity Surveyor to join our award-winning Energy team in the North East of England with projects located in Durham & Stockton on Tees. Our team is known for its extensive in-house expertise and continual drive to innovate within the industry. The Managing Quantity Surveyor will provide assistance, support, and advice on all commercial issues on Power, Transmission & Distribution projects such as Substations. As a Managing Quantity Surveyor, you will report into the Senior Commercial Manager whilst leading a team of Senior Quantity Surveyors, Quantity Surveyors & Assistant Quantity Surveyors on the project.
Following the ‘One Murphy’ approach, we’re able to deliver all aspects of the projects we work on. Murphy has designed, constructed, and commissioned projects for clients such as National Grid, SSE and Ørsted, on both transmission and distribution networks within the Energy sector
What you will be doing
1. Efficiently manage all commercial aspects of the Project and maintain regular liaison with all stakeholders.
2. Assist in building a team, manage the development of personal plans, establishment of objectives/targets for all direct reports and monitor on an ongoing basis - maintain performance.
3. Collate, analysis & challenge Cost/Value Reports and forecasts as required, implement required actions.
4. Design and implement a commercial strategy for their portfolio and tenders with the assistance of their functional manager.
5. Assist with the development and training of Commercial Practitioners including supervisor / mentor / counsellor role for staff undertaking their APC or equivalent.
6. Ensure that a review of all of the contractual obligations and commercial risks is carried out prior to the submission of tenders.
7. Assist in maximising of cash position, including WIP control, cash flow production & improvement plans for all projects.
8. Identification and advice upon of insurance related issues, including PI.
9. Assist in work winning duties as required, including proactive release of team members and attendance at Client Presentations for Tender Interviews
10. Ensuring optimum performance of commercial team for the portfolio of work, undertaking constant reviewing for margin gains in efficiency and timely resource forecasting.
11. Ensure that the outturn costs on the projects are monitored monthly through a detailed bottom up resourced and costed forecast maintained.
Who are we looking for?
12. HND/Degree qualification
13. Chartered Quantity Surveyor (MRICS) or equivalent.
14. Registered with RICS / ICES
15. Excellent knowledge of Standard Forms of Contract (NEC) and Standard Methods of Measurement
16. Commercially astute with substantial experience within a commercial role in the Civil Engineering / Construction Industry.
17. Excellent knowledge of Standard Forms of Contract and Standard Methods of Measurement.
18. Understanding of programming techniques and project controls
