A Mechanical Design Engineer is required to join an International Defence Systems company that designs, manufactures, and supports world-leading military systems. The successful Mechanical Design Engineer will be responsible for the design and engineering for a number of projects. Working as part of the Engineering Team, the Mechanical Design Engineer is expected to develop the project technical requirements, produce concept design solutions, detailed designs including generating and updating 3D CAD models and 2D technical drawings.
The Mechanical Design Engineer may also support build and test activities, including hands-on tasks where appropriate. The Mechanical Design Engineer will report to the Lead/Principal Engineers and is expected to pro-actively participate in, and when necessary, lead improvement initiatives using a continuous improvement mindset.
Responsibilities:
1. Action engineering & design activities including supporting product development.
2. Deliver work packages to a defined standard, budget, and time-scale.
3. Work within the Engineering policies and processes.
4. Deliver personal development plan actions.
5. Support customer visits/technical meetings and collaborate with Operations, Projects, Procurement, and Quality.
6. Generate purchase requisitions for delivery of budgeted activities and hardware.
7. Deliver design activities assigned to the Design Engineer.
8. Create, update, and control 3D CAD models.
9. Produce 2D technical drawings and engineering documentation.
10. Work accurately in a data management system within a configuration-controlled environment.
11. Adhere to defined safety standards and testing processes.
12. Protect business confidentiality when disclosing information to 3rd parties.
13. Produce concept and detailed designs with justifications.
14. Progress documentation and engineering change control processes.
15. Carry out engineering calculations to support design proposals.
16. Create and manage documentation to support understanding of the knowledge.
17. Present and communicate designs and design changes.
18. Contribute to internal design reviews and support prototypes build and test activities.
19. Actively support continuous improvement activities throughout the business.
Qualifications, Skills, or Experience:
1. Degree or equivalent combination of experience and training in mechanical or related discipline.
2. Good command of mechanical engineering fundamentals in a manufacturing environment.
3. Drive and flexibility to maintain pace of work as priorities and customer requirements change.
4. Ability to communicate designs effectively through written and verbal methods.
5. Experience of generating technical drawings and geometric tolerancing.
6. Strong team player with attention to detail.
7. Hands-on approach and willingness to perform tasks effectively.
8. Knowledge and experience in design analysis, verification, and validation techniques such as CAD, FEA, FMECA, DFM.
9. Experience with PDM and ERP software.
10. Willingness to travel worldwide and ability to obtain a UK SC clearance.
11. Commitment to continuing professional development and education.
12. UK driving licence and Chartered Engineer status with a relevant UK professional body preferred.
13. Experience in a design/manufacturing environment and SolidWorks or similar 3D CAD.
14. Experience of hydraulics and high-pressure oil and gas sealing technologies.
15. Familiarity with multinational projects subject to US ITAR and UK export legislation.
Note: Security Clearance (SC) may be required due to the nature of the Defence products involved.
