Overview of the job
This is a non-operational role supporting the appropriate function.
Summary
The job holder will monitor, log and x-ray all deliveries to the establishment and delivery to the relevant internal/external location. This is a support job with no line management responsibilities.
Responsibilities, Activities and Duties
The job holder will be required to carry the following responsibilities, activities and duties:
1. Monitor, log and x-ray all deliveries to the establishment and deliver to relevant areas.
2. Request, process and receive goods using Prison finance system when required.
3. Prepare and process requisitions, receipt goods in and ensure stock levels are maintained through inventory systems.
4. Supervise prisoner workforce in relevant areas.
5. Prepare completed manufactured goods for distribution to other establishments.
6. Receive and distribute staff uniform/carry out clothing exchange duties (kit change) and transport laundry on a weekly basis.
7. Comply with waste management adhering to Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) regulations.
8. Monitor outside storage areas and containers maintaining accurate details.
9. Undertake general fork lift truck and Heavy Goods Vehicle (HGV) duties.
10. Undertake vehicle checks.
11. Receive and document all recorded prison mail.
12. Distribute/remove office furniture/equipment as required.
13. Respond appropriately to invoke emergency procedures in line with Local Security Strategy and National Security Framework. Any initial decisions or actions will need to be referred to management for further action.
Undertake other Support tasks including:
1. Log materials used and assist with stocktaking of tools, equipment and materials.
2. Undertake activities in such a way to ensure that waste is reduced and that areas of work are safe, clean and tidy whilst work is in progress.
3. Inform manager to ensure sufficient levels of stock are maintained.
4. Ensure allocated Planned Maintenance and small repairs are carried out, undertaking service requests raised via the computer aided facilities management system.
5. Carry out project work when required.
6. Advise on sufficient levels of stock and request procurement of goods and services and ensure all materials used are logged and are fit for purpose.
7. Escort technical contractors when required, working with and supervising them in accordance with Local Security Strategy (LSS).
8. Maintain regular communications via radio net in accordance with (LSS).
9. Undertake the role of banksman directing the operation of some plant equipment or machinery.
10. Responsible for tools and plant machinery, carrying out checks at regular intervals and completing relevant documentation in accordance with Local Security Strategy (LSS) and National Security Framework (NSF).
11. Comply with Health & Safety policies, procedures and legislation to ensure statutory and mandatory compliance.
12. Drive estates vehicles and operate plant equipment.
13. Operate within command mode in line with local contingency plans.
14. Undertake incidental and emergency or urgent tasks and assignments as per Service Delivery Agreement timescales in a safe manner.
15. Assemble products on site when required.
16. Carry out pest control prevention measures across the estate when required.
17. Contribute to prisoner reports including parole and sentence planning.

An ability to fulfil all spoken aspects of the role with confidence through the medium of English or (where specified in Wales) Welsh.

Technical Requirements
1. Will require basic knowledge of role and will be required to undertake specific training and courses in work area.
2. Will comply with the relevant Health & Safety policies and legislation.
3. If required, to undertake and qualify for the appropriate Forklift Driving course and maintain industry based standards to ensure continuance of the qualification.
4. Must complete a manual handling course, and undertake basic security awareness and be trained in break-away techniques if deemed required.
Hours of Work (Unsocial Hours) Allowances
HMPPS Staff on closed pay structures only
Additional Conditioned Hours Pensionable (ACHP) Staff moving from a closed 39 hour pay structure will be eligible for the two protected pensionable additional committed hours (ACHP). They will work a 39 hour week consisting of the standard 37 hour week and a further 2 additional hours (ACHP) paid at plain time pensionable rate.
Working Arrangements & Further Information
The MoJ offers Hybrid Working arrangements where business need allows. This is an informal, non-contractual form of flexible working that blends working from your base location, different MoJ sites and/or from home (please be aware that this role can only be worked in the UK and not overseas). Some roles will not be suitable for Hybrid Working. Similarly, Hybrid Working will not suit everyone’s circumstances. Arrangements will be discussed and agreed with the successful candidate(s) and subject to regular review.
For nationally advertised roles, the successful candidate(s) will be appointed to a MoJ office location, which may include their nearest Justice Collaboration Centre or Justice Satellite Office. This will be discussed and agreed on the completion of pre-employment checks.
Some of MoJ’s terms and conditions of service are changing as part of Civil Service reform. The changes will apply to staff joining MoJ who are new to the Civil Service. Staff joining MoJ from other civil service employers will transfer onto the new MoJ terms if they are already on 'modernised' terms in their current post or onto 'unmodernised' MoJ terms if they are on 'unmodernised' terms at their current post. Details will be available if an offer is made.
Standard full-time working hours are 37 hours per week excluding breaks which are unpaid. HMPPS welcomes part-time, flexible and job-sharing working patterns, where they meet the demands of the role and business needs. All applications for part-time, flexible and job-sharing working patterns will be considered in accordance with the HMPPS’ Flexible Working policy.
If you are a current NPS employee, this vacancy may be available on a Loan basis for up to 2 years. Applications are invited from suitable qualified staff. The Loan/Secondment is subject to the approval of the selected candidate's Business Unit, which should be obtained before confirmation of appointment.

The holiday year runs from 1 March. If you work a non-standard work pattern your leave entitlement may be expressed in either hours or days as appropriate. Leave entitlement is calculated on a pro-rata basis and you will be advised of your actual entitlement on appointment. If you were appointed internally and your leave was previously calculated in days, this will continue to be the case.
Bank, Public and Privilege Holidays
You are entitled to 9 days (66 hours 36 minutes) in recognition of bank, public and privilege holidays. These hours are added to your annual leave allowance. There is a requirement to work some public and bank holidays subject to your shift pattern and the operational needs of the establishment.

Internal candidates are subject to probation if they have not already served a probationary period within HMPPS.
