Job summary
The Lead Nurse will appropriately manage patients with osteoporosis to prevent deterioration and disease progression, reduce admissions as a direct consequence of osteoporotic fracture, promote early identification and intervention in patients presenting with osteoporotic fractures.
The Lead Nurse will develop & lead a co-ordinated approach in the specialist field of osteoporosis, provide professional support and highly specialist advice on a consultancy basis to patients and staff across the health, social care, private and voluntary agency sectors on issues relating to osteoporosis which is based on the latest available evidence of best practice.
The Lead Nurse will adopt a highly visible and accessible approach for patients, their carer/relatives and staff and their role will be clinically focused to support the department as a whole. They will lead by example and empower staff in their personal and professional development to undertake a greater range of clinical skills to modernise and improve patient care, including updates of essential training.

About us
The service sits within the Rheumatology department but runs independently, covering all aspects of osteoporosis from diagnosis, to treatment and monitoring. The service is primarily nurse led, with oversight from two Rheumatology consultants and supported by secretarial staff.
Nurses carry out DXA scans at Paignton Health and Wellbeing Centre and Osteoporosis Management clinics there and at Torbay Hospital. Clinics are done both in person and on the telephone, with regular MDT meetings for discussion of complex patients.
Job responsibilities
* Lead multi-disciplinary team meetings encouraging all staff to take a proactive approach to managing workload.
* Proactively seek feedback from patients and their families during their attendance on the standard of care they have received.
* Ensure processes are in place to facilitate effective communication with all disciplines, patients and relatives.
* Be responsible for using an appropriate and varied approach for resolving complaints and issues at a local level in partnership with patients, carers, their family and other health care professionals.
* Arrange and chair regular team meetings ensuring agreed actions are recorded and reviewed.
