JOB DESCRIPTION Job title: Senior Network Engineer Location: Reading Reporting to: Team Leader 3 rd Line (Network Operations) Date : February 2016 Job purpose: The Senior Network Engineer is a key member of the team ensuring efficient, productive and high quality network services and availability amongst Pulsant’s multiple UK data-centres. This role will provide technical support to external clients & internal employees, primarily assisting them with networking, but extending to server, application, desktop, and hardware problems or change requests via phone, email & fax. Key Responsibilities: mso-list:l0&32;tab-stops:list&32"> Ownership of the assigned core network projects that fall within departmental responsibilities and objectives from inception through to deployment, and accountable for ensuring it meets the defined requirements in its fully delivered form mso-list:l0&32;tab-stops:list&32"> Provide support to Pulsant’s core network stretching across the UK sites and international points of presence. mso-list:l0&32;tab-stops:list&32"> Manage and provision DWDM waves for new customers and maintain optical devices such as OEOs/Mux/Amplifiers. mso-list:l0&32;tab-stops:list&32"> Manage and maintain core network devices such as Cisco ASR routers. mso-list:l0&32;tab-stops:list&32"> Provide 3 rd level support to customers handling customer communication at a very high standard including tickets, phone, email requests and network updates related to the Pulsant’s core network and customer solutions. mso-list:l0&32;tab-stops:list&32"> Manage network failures along with ability to liaise and escalate to management or deal confidently with third-party suppliers to ensure effective running of network services. mso-list:l0&32;tab-stops:list&32"> Pro-actively ensure that regular informational updates are provided to Account Managers and Technical Team regarding scheduled maintenance, improvements or updates to the network. mso-list:l0&32;tab-stops:list&32"> Manage incidents directly with clients to completion within defined SLAs & OLAs. mso-list:l0&32;tab-stops:list&32"> Ensuring that where maintenance work is required, advance and formal notice are provided to customers in line with Pulsant’s SLAs. mso-list:l0&32;tab-stops:list&32"> Building strong collaborative relationships based on mutual respect. mso-list:l0&32;tab-stops:list&32"> Follow current procedures to document the change or release as well as moving them through the approval process. mso-list:l0&32;tab-stops:list&32"> Follow predefined principles to ensure that consistency and standardisation of all network projects is kept up to the highest levels. mso-list:l0&32;tab-stops:list&32"> Provide mentoring support and deliver training sessions to less experienced members within the team and to the wider Company. mso-list:l0&32;tab-stops:list&32"> Provide implementation expertise that allows delivery of high quality solutions that meet the needs of Pulsant’s core network and customer solutions. mso-list:l0&32;tab-stops:list&32"> Perform, with minimal supervision, a range of scheduled core network maintenance tasks and internal network support if required. mso-list:l0&32;tab-stops:list&32"> Provide additional network support to different departments within the organisation. mso-list:l0&32;tab-stops:list&32"> Generate innovative solutions in work situations; identifying different and creative ways to deal with work problems and opportunities. mso-list:l0&32;tab-stops:list&32"> Actively identify new areas for learning; regularly creating and taking advantage of learning opportunities; using newly gained knowledge and skills on the job and learning through their application. mso-list:l0&32;tab-stops:list&32"> Handle a wide variety of networking tasks, such as daily checks of network monitoring, cabling requirements, provisioning of additional network resources. PERSON SPECIFICATION Education & Qualifications Essential HND/BTEC or related IT, Computer Science or equivalent, qualification as a minimum. CCNP certification or above. Minimum GCSE level, or equivalent, in English. Full UK Driving Licence. Desirable CCIE certification or equivalent. Minimum Juniper Networks Certified Internet Associate (JNCIA) or equivalent. Experience Essential Vast amount of technical phone support experience within an ICT support team. Working in a service desk environment supporting over 500 users. Working within an ISP or Telco environment. Experience in access technologies including DSL, EFM, MPLS, etc. Substantial experience of IT Networking systems and standards. Experience of complex networks and Data Centre network architecture. You will have replaced switch/router/firewall components as well as configurations to restore service to a failed environment. Strong experience with using service provider level Cisco routing/switching equipment, F5 load balancers, Juniper plus ideally HP, Extreme and Arista switches. Experience with routing protocols including MP-BGP & OSPFv2/v3 and EIGRP, ideally in service provider networks. Experience with MPLS technologies in service provider networks including following protocols and products: LDP, RSVP, L2VPNs, VPLS, L3VPNs, MPLS-TE. Experience with Cisco ASA firewalls especially incorporating IPSEC and SSL protocols. Experience with other network technologies, including; HSRP/VRRP/GLBP, STP/RSTP/MSTP, Dot1q, QinQ, LAG/LACP, MTUs, CAM, ARP, CDP. Experience with CAT5 and fibre cabling and Data Centres cabling management. Experience with Data Centres network monitoring including SNMP and Syslog protocols. Desirable Experience of working with large Storage Area Network, Windows and Virtualisation technologies. Expert knowledge of TCP/IP and dynamic routing protocols (OSPF and BGP) Knowledge of ISP systems (web & mail hosting platforms, DNS, large IP networks, VOIP etc.) Network diagnostic tools, such as TCP-flow, TCP-dump, ethereal etc. Understanding of telecommunications terminology and infrastructure (PSTN, ISDN, PDH and SDH). Desirable Knowledge of DWDM and network equipment and optics. Knowledge of cisco ACI.
