POST DESCRIPTION
The Fellowship includes these components:
1. Teaching
The post holder will have a regular schedule of teaching commitments and will actively contribute to the development and delivery of the Trust's undergraduate education programme for Medical Students. The post holder, in collaboration with the Trust Undergraduate Tutor, will take a lead role in supporting and delivering the in-house teaching programme for undergraduate medical students undertaking Psychiatry placements within the Trust. This will include contributing to regular student induction days, coordinating fellow psychiatric trainees to teach students, supporting with simulation training and supporting with student meetings.
2. Educational Research and QI
The post holder will have the opportunity to take part in a range of educational research activities and QI Projects, centred on the training of undergraduate medical students but including other groups of learners. The Trust has a large Research department and QI Team who support doctors in these areas. The post holder will be supported to generate publishable outputs, including conference presentations (national and international) and publications in peer-reviewed medical and educational journals.
3. Clinical commitment
A clinical commitment of 1 day per week with the Trust will ensure that the post holder maintains their clinical involvement during the attachment and encounters postgraduate doctors in a clinical setting. Details of this clinical component will depend on the appointee's clinical specialty and experience, but might include outpatient clinic or related activity. Remuneration will be in keeping with the level of training at the time of appointment.
4. Learning about Medical Education Structures and Roles
In order to learn about medical education from a more systemic perspective, the post holder will attend the Trust Medical Education Committee meetings. There will be opportunities also to attend meetings at the KMMS (Canterbury) and GKT (London) Medical Schools and to shadow UG tutors and the Director of Undergraduate Medical Education.
5. Simulation
Simulation training for undergraduates is a key part of the Medical Education department. Your role will be to support with simulation training delivered face to face at teaching events.
KEY RESULT AREAS:
1. Supporting education for medical students.
2. Supporting the requirement to meet the needs of the LDA (Learning and Development Agreement), which is our contract with Health Education England.
3. Supporting the need to meet the requirements of KMMS.
4. Supporting the need to meet the requirements of GKT Kings College London.
5. Contribute to the development of MDT training in KMPT.
6. Increasing the profile of KMPT as a major education provider.
7. Increasing the popularity of KMPT among trainee doctors.
Clinical duties
Within the Medical Education department, the candidate will be part of an enthusiastic and dynamic multi-professional team including Consultants, trainees and other clinicians. There will be exposure to (e.g. Older Adults patients and Psychiatric Inpatient wards). Specialist clinics can be accommodated depending on the candidate's requirements. Contribution to an out of hours tier 2 on-call rota will be expected for section 12 approved doctors.
RESPONSIBILITY:
The post holder will be part of the Medical Education team and will carry out various projects/roles to support the education, training and improved experience of our medical student doctors/specific fellowship focus as agreed in Education and Training. The post will offer learning opportunities allowing the Fellow to develop educational insight and capability. This will include lecturing and small group work with medical undergraduates, as well as multi-professional group learning opportunities. Generic professionalism training opportunities will also be provided. Clinical skills training for undergraduates will form a significant part of the job description. The post holder will also be trained in workplace-based assessment methods and appraisal techniques. The Fellow will be expected to build a clinical educational portfolio.
You may work closely with the Medical Education Manager and Deputy Medical Education Manager throughout the post on the following projects:
* Simulation facility development and training
* Medical Student teaching
* Medical Student inductions
* Matching specialty teaching programmes to the relevant medical school curricula
* Development of undergrad website content
* Development of in-house e-learning resources
* Audit as part of Medical Education
* Medical Education Quality Monitoring
* Faculty Development
Teaching Administrative support will be offered on all projects. The post holder will carry out two sessions of clinical work per week. The duties and responsibilities outlined above are not intended to be exhaustive, may vary over time and are subject to management review and amendment.
Appraisal and Supervision
The Director of Undergraduate Medical Education will supervise the Fellow, with one hour per week regular supervision including setting objectives and agreeing a personal development plan. These will be regularly reviewed. The Fellow's development needs will be met through the Trust, in conjunction with opportunities and services provided by the KMPT.
ENVIRONMENT:
Driving licence essential: The post holder is required to be flexible and to travel where necessary across KMPT sites. The post holder may be required to work cross site when required across Kent. Face to face teaching support at various KMPT Kent Sites.
