The Opportunity
The Mechanical Engineering Function at Leonardo Luton is looking to recruit a Fluid Dynamics (Pressure) engineer to join the existing team. The engineer will be responsible for conducting fluid dynamics pressure analysis and test whilst communicating the results and advising on all aspects of pressure engineering activities. The role will involve predominantly working with multi-discipline project teams across the Luton Leonardo Electronic Warfare Business.
What you will do:
* Analyse and assess mechanical designs for pressure performance and safety against regulatory and customer requirements using circuit diagrams, statements of safe working limits, pressure analysis software (Automation Studio – preferred), CFD techniques (Icepak and Fluent – preferred, other considered) and classical hand calculations.
* Report on all technical matters to a Leonardo Competent Person Pressure Systems to provide guidance on pressure / cooling strategies and advise on pressure design improvements where necessary.
* Support the selection of manufacturing technologies and materials based on a sound understanding of the mechanical engineering and performance of the product.
* Generate and maintain technical files under data management control and generate reports for approval.
* Verify and check design data and change notices for equipment.
* Support the pressure aspects of product development through design, test, risk management certification and in-service support within budget and timescales.
* Support visits and meetings at other Leonardo sites, suppliers and customers when required.
* Carry out fluid dynamics and pressure experimentation and design proving, within a Laboratory Environment.
* Local management of laboratory pressure test equipment and maintenance including support to production pressure test facilities.
* Support the laboratory management in promoting safe working, including but not exclusively, local area risk assessments and control of substances hazardous to health, in accordance with Safety, Health and Environmental legislation.
What we are looking for:
* Degree or equivalent in Mechanical or Aeronautical Engineering.
* Professional recognition as a Chartered Engineer or proven equivalent.
* Competent Person status in Pressure Systems.
* A proven knowledge of Fluid Dynamics or Pressure analysis and previous experience in developing equipment for extreme operating environments, preferably in the design, development and test of electronics packaging.
* Use of Computational Fluid Dynamics and Pressure analysis software.
* Experience of environmental testing methods for design verification is desirable with knowledge industry standards.
* Knowledge of Legislation and Regulatory Standards including but not limited to Def Stan 00-970, Health and Safety HSE Regulations including Hazardous Waste Regulations, Pressure Equipment (Safety) Regulations, the Pressure System Safety Regulations and Environmental legislation including the Fluorinated Greenhouse Gas Regulations.
* Verbal and written communication skills.
* Demonstrate a high level of practical workmanship skills in the assembly, test and repair of small mechanical and fluid devices (Including the practice of tool control and recording of such work).
* Knowledge of the requirements for equipment inspection for safety compliance including generation of fault/ failure reports.
* Team working approach with a high degree of personal integrity.
