Do you have experience of working with children? Are you looking for a rewarding volunteer role? Can you commit to 2 hours of volunteering per week for at least 6 months?
If you said yes, you could be perfect for this role!
We are looking for friendly and enthusiastic volunteers to befriend parents and children who have experienced domestic abuse and are living in our refuges across Northamptonshire. This particular role is based in Corby, and you will volunteer alongside our Children's Domestic Abuse Specialists to help ensure children in refuge are able to thrive. This could involve organising activity sessions with the children or encouraging parents to attend children's groups in the community.
You will need to be available consistently for 2 hours per week between 9am and 3pm, Monday to Friday. Being available during the school holidays is a bonus!
Key Tasks:
* Supporting parents to gain access to local children services and facilities.
* Supporting parents and children to develop wider social links in the Corby area.
* Supporting staff to deliver domestic abuse groups for children and parents.
* Liaising closely with the Children Domestic Abuse Specialists to provide handovers where necessary.
* Helping to organise children's group activities or one-to-one sessions to enable parents the time to access support.
What we are looking for:
* Experience working with children or in a childcare setting.
* Be enthusiastic about helping a local charity to support families affected by domestic abuse.
* Be trustworthy and reliable.
* Be committed to volunteering for at least 6 months.
* Be calm and creative when engaging with children and young people.
* Have excellent communication and team working skills.
If you can commit to regular hours (such as 2-3 hours per week), we would be delighted to discuss ongoing projects that might interest you. As it takes an amount of time and resources to welcome new volunteers on board, we would appreciate it if you pledged to support us initially for a minimum of 6 months.
What we offer:
* You will be given an induction and all necessary training for this role.
* You will have a volunteer mentor as well as support from our volunteer coordinator.
* You will be able to develop new and existing transferable skills.
* You will be working as part of a dedicated and motivated team of volunteers.
* You will have the opportunity to make a real difference to the lives of those we support.
* Volunteers can claim all reasonable and previously agreed expenses (such as for travel or reimbursement for items purchased).
Full training for the role will be given and will include subjects such as domestic abuse, safeguarding, and working with clients. Our induction training runs every three months (the next in March 2025) and includes one day of training onsite at our head office in Wollaston and one day of online training (both days 10am to 3pm). This training is compulsory.
NDAS is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment. Volunteers will be expected to undertake safeguarding checks, including a criminal record check via the Disclosure and Barring Service.
Please note, it is an offence to apply for the role if the applicant is barred from engaging in regulated activity relevant to children.
This position is exempt from the provisions of the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 and the amendments to the Exceptions Order 1975 (2013 and 2020), and requires you to disclose all spent convictions and cautions except those which are ‘protected’ under Police Act 1997 – Part V.
