The Role
An exciting opportunity for a dedicated and enthusiastic individual to join our Railway Control Centre (RCC) as a Fire Detection and Information Controller. In this role, you will supervise the Fire Detection System for the Running Tunnels and electrical rooms in the Service Tunnel, alerting the necessary supervisors to trigger appropriate actions for any alarms. Additionally, you will take on the role of Information Controller, responsible for collecting, recording, and communicating real-time information related to rail activity and events.
Principal Accountabilities
FDC Responsibilities:
1. Supervise the Fire Detection System in real-time, reporting any malfunctions to Technicians and ensuring Minimum Operation Requirements (MORs) for tunnel operations are met.
2. Manage fire alarms and immediately implement actions, such as triggering emergency services in France and the UK (FLOR, SLOR, Rescue Services).
3. Manage and report any incidents or accidents in the tunnel to fire crews and the RCC Supervisor.
4. Oversee the access, exit, movement, and positioning of emergency and maintenance vehicles in the Service Tunnel and monitor the safety of solo workers.
5. Keep the computerised documentation system up to date, including the logbook, message book, and fault log.
6. Comply with all safety documentation applicable to the role of FDC Controller.
7. Manage the Engineering Management System (EMS) lighting interface in the three tunnels.
8. Maintain constant communication with the French and UK FLOR for all safety-related events.
INFOC Responsibilities:
1. Monitor rail operation events using the mimic display panel and space-time graphic in the RCC, ensuring regular communication with other controllers and supervisors on shift.
2. Identify the causes of failures and delays affecting rail services.
3. Communicate necessary information to various departments and Railway or Infrastructure undertakings in degraded mode (TCCs, ODM, Eurostar, AFC, Fréthun, etc.).
4. Log reasons for delays and changes to departure times in the Info System.
5. Assign rake numbers to missions and changes of platforms.
6. Communicate the various stages of rail service events via SMS.
7. Comply with all safety documentation applicable to the role of Information Controller.
8. Keep the computerised documentation system up to date, including the logbook, message book, and fault log.
Qualifications and Experience
1. Educated to A-Level standard or equivalent.
2. Previous experience in a Railway and/or Control Centre environment would be beneficial.
3. Proficiency in English is required, with the ability to communicate in French to an intermediate level (B2 or above) is essential.
4. A valid driving licence is essential to facilitate commuting to the workplace in either the UK or France (at least 20% of shifts will be planned in the staff member’s country of residence).
What to Expect
Recruitment Process:
Given the nature of this role, the process will include an initial French language competency test (an informal conversation via Teams), a first-stage interview, Psychometric (Safety Competency) Testing, and a visit to one of our Railway Control Centres (RCC’s) either in the UK or France.
In addition, successful candidates will need to pass the safety-critical medical standard required for this role.
The proposed start date for training to commence is April/May 2025.
