We are seeking a Specialist Grade Doctor within the Torbay Local Delivery Unit (LDU) of the Adult Clinical Directorate. It is a post for a General Adult Psychiatrist for patients age 18-65 years old (population 23,535) serving a large urban community in Torbay. Our Trust has worked closely with the commissioners to redesign the service and the recently formed Adult LDU for Torbay is divided into three teams of a broadly equitable population size based on GP patches.
The team consists of a full-time Clinical Team Leader, Mental Health Nurses, Occupational Therapists, Social Workers, and Support Time and Recovery Workers. All 3 Community Mental Health Teams in Torbay share an Accommodation officer, a Personality Disorder Lead, and a Carers support team. The team has a strong MDT approach and works cohesively to offer an effective and safe recovery-focused service to people referred into the team.
This team has access to specialist psychological therapy at STEP 4 provided by the Psychology and Psychological therapy Team. The post holder will provide medical advice regarding the ongoing management of people who use services under the GPs. To support the role of the team, the national guidance (DoH 2005, GMC 2005) on new ways of working for psychiatrists and their teams has been adopted.
Main duties of the job
The post holder will be currently based at the Health and Wellbeing Clinic, (Chadwell Centre) within the Paignton area, where private office space with PC accessibility and IT support is available, and appropriate secretarial support will be provided. There is another clinic located in Torbay Health & Wellbeing Hub at Haytor Unit, Torbay Hospital, Lowes Bridge, Torquay TQ2 7AA, should there be clinical necessity for the service user and their family to be seen there.
You will offer assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of patients as well as other expert clinical services in Paignton and Brixham.
The role and responsibility of the specialist doctors in multidisciplinary teams has been agreed by the Trust board and is outlined above.
Contract - 2 years - this might be converted to a substantive post after this period. If pursuing the CSER / Portfolio route, the post holder will be supported for this by the trust.

Person Specification
Experience
* Minimum of 12 years medical work (either continuous period or in aggregate) since obtaining a primary medical qualification of which a minimum of six years should have been in a relevant specialty in the Specialty Doctor and/or closed SAS grades. Equivalent years experience in a relevant specialty from other medical grades including from overseas will also be accepted.
* Shall meet the criteria set out in the Specialist grade generic capabilities framework found at the following link: Specialist grade generic capabilities framework
* Experience at senior level working in the field of Psychiatry.
* Experience of Home Treatment or equivalent.
* Delivering supervision of non-medical prescribers.
Qualifications
* MB BS or equivalent.
* GMC registration.
* Membership or Affiliateship of the Royal College of Psychiatrists or equivalent.
* Approved under Section 12(2) of the Mental Health Act 1983.
Clinical Skills and Knowledge
* Excellent clinical skills in interviewing and physical and psychological assessment of patients.
* Ability to manage crises and act independently.
* Ability to manage potentially violent and disturbed patients.
* Confidence in assessing and managing physical health problems and emergencies.
* Working knowledge of the Mental Health Act 1983, to be acquired by Overseas Doctors in the first 6 months.
* Good knowledge of relevant Mental Health legislation including the MCA.
* Good knowledge of clinical risk management.
* Good knowledge of evidence-based strategies for management of psychiatric disorder.
* Ability to apply psychological models to practical situations.
* Understanding of NHS organisational arrangements including social care.

* Enthusiasm to contribute to research on site.
* Publications in peer-reviewed journals.
