Our Benefits
About The Role
As our Active Travel & Road Safety Officer, you’ll be responsible for the day-to-day management of our road safety education and cycle training programmes, helping the Road Safety Manager to develop and improve what we offer to our residents. You will also work closely with our Transport Planning team and other colleagues across the council to promote active, sustainable and safe travel.
You’ll liaise with our external cycle training partner, helping to manage our 6 cycle training hubs and maximising training opportunities for all our residents including our school children. We are especially keen to reach out to those groups and communities who may not have had an opportunity to participate in cycle training before now and we are delivering innovative all-ability training sessions at our cycling hubs. Your enthusiasm and ability to look for innovative solutions will help us to broaden our offer.
You will also help to manage our road safety education programme, helping us with the vital job of making our streets safer and giving our residents the confidence and skills to travel sustainably. The majority of collisions in the borough are caused by road user behaviour so helping to educate people and promote road safety is essential in working towards our aim of no fatalities or serious injuries on our roads by 2041.
This is a fantastic opportunity to work with colleagues across the council to ensure active sustainable and safe travel is fully embedded into everything we do. You’ll be part of a creative team with clear values centred around curiosity, making things happen, seeing the bigger picture, collaborating and achieving positive outcomes.

Our team works closely together, focused on achieving our target of 71% of all journeys being made by sustainable modes by 2041. We are equally committed to ensuring residents have the skills and confidence to walk, wheel, and cycle whenever possible.
Currently, we are consulting on our Transport Strategy and developing our Road Safety Action Plan. Once finalised, these will guide our delivery programme—whether through influencing developers, promoting road safety education for residents, or collaborating with colleagues in the Transport & Parking team and other council departments.
