The primary role of the Maternity Support Worker (MSW) is to assist, support and work in collaboration with the midwife and the wider multidisciplinary team to provide safe and holistic women-centered care.
Under the direct or indirect supervision of the midwife, the MSW assists with and provides clinical care following completion of relevant training. The post is rotational, and the employee will receive appropriate training for the clinical settings, which include hospital wards (antenatal and postnatal), Delivery Suite, Community, and our Assessment unit. This role includes an element of lone working within the community setting; applicants should have access to their own car, and mileage expenses will be claimable. We are looking for a positive, enthusiastic, and motivated team member.
The post holder is expected to demonstrate a set of defined competencies. Support will be provided to employees to further develop their skills and explore pathways for progression where appropriate. Main Duties of the Job
Demonstrate understanding of the importance of working in partnership with women and their families. Develop and maintain positive relationships, support informed decision makers, and respect the wishes of women and their families, particularly when the family unit is separated or when the mother/baby is critically ill.
Understand the MSW's scope of practice and the importance of the role within the national framework to enable working within limits of own competence and authority, escalating to the MDT to inform care planning in line with national and local guidance to avoid harm.
Administrative Duties
Ensure that all clinical documentation, whether written or electronic, is accurately and confidentially collected, updated, stored, and filed in accordance with local information governance and record-keeping policy and guidance.
Job Responsibilities
Provide administrative support to the maternity team, both in hospital and community settings.
Participate in tracking, obtaining, and filing clinical records as required in line with local policy and guidance.

Convey an approachable and professional manner to all mothers and their families, demonstrating awareness of discriminatory attitudes and challenging this behavior to promote equality. This includes recognizing and supporting individuals from protected characteristics groups as per the Equality Act 2010.
Ensure that knowledge of local safeguarding policy and procedure is maintained.
Be vigilant regarding Child Protection issues and refer concerns in a timely manner to the registered midwife, complying with legal requirements.
Training Responsibilities
Attend all statutory and mandatory training as required.
Identify own training and development needs and undertake appropriate training/education to ensure a contemporary knowledge base and skill set are maintained.
Participate in the annual individual performance review process, where objectives will be agreed, performance monitored, and personal development needs discussed.
Person Specification
Essential and Desirable
* GCSE Maths Grades A-C, Levels 4-9, Functional Skills Level 2 or equivalent
* GCSE English Grades A-C, Levels 4-9, Functional Skills Level 2 or equivalent
* NVQ Level 3 in Health care or equivalent experience
* Commit to undertake in-house training
* Previous experience of working with members of the public
* Understanding of Safeguarding issues
* Awareness of Health and Safety issues
* Knowledge and understanding of data protection confidentiality
* Approachable manner with good interpersonal skills
* Effective written and verbal communication skills
* Completed Maternity competency booklet
* Foundation Degree Maternity Pathway
