Barbican Centre
The Barbican is an international arts, conference and education centre in the heart of the City of London. We are London’s Creative Catalyst for arts, curiosity and enterprise. Across our theatres, concert halls, cinemas, galleries, business venues and public and community spaces, we spark creative possibilities and transformation for artists, audiences, and communities – to inspire, connect and provoke debate. We are the place to be and a place where everyone is welcome.
The Role
We are looking for a motivated and highly organised person to join our Communications team and wider Communications department (which includes Marketing, Digital and Social Media teams and Audience Experience) to contribute to the press campaigns which promote our Arts and Participation programme. You will report to the Communications Manager (Theatre & Dance and Creative Collaboration) and work closely with the Communications Manager (Cinema) and Communications Officer (Arts & Participation).
In this role, you will be a key member of a small team within the Communications department. You will deal with general press enquiries including press imagery requests and correspondence about press tickets, help to greet media attending press nights, and assist with filming and photography. You will help to maintain office systems and keep key documentation updated. You will also start to build relationships with key stakeholders within your artforms, including our resident and associate companies, producers, curators, agents, artists, creatives and external PR representatives where relevant.
The focus of your role is administrative, so good computer and database skills are necessary with strong copy writing and verbal communication skills and some experience dealing with external stakeholders or customers. Excellent planning and organisational skills are essential, with demonstrable experience of meeting deadlines, managing time-sensitive tasks and the ability to work under pressure.
The Person
Passion for the arts is important, and you will be a committed team player. Our ideal candidate will have a love of Theatre, Dance and Cinema, and an active interest in participation work. We are looking for someone with some prior experience and good working knowledge of communications, or journalism, or the arts industry (cinema/ theatre/ dance in particular) who will demonstrate an interest in developing in these areas.
Barbican Benefits
The Barbican also offers a wide range of staff benefits including hybrid working, a great pension scheme, season ticket loans, a cycle to work scheme, free access to some museums and galleries, and discounts on retail, healthcare and on-site cafes and restaurants. You will have access to trained Mental Health First Aiders and City of London and Barbican staff networks.
