Outline of Role We’re looking for a commercially-minded and self-motivated Quantity Surveyor to join our growing M&E division. This is an exciting opportunity to take ownership of a £4m (and growing) account, predominantly focused on reactive maintenance for major blue chip retail clients. You’ll be part of a dynamic team, providing expert commercial and contractual input from project inception through to final account. With strong development potential, this role offers the chance to grow alongside a high-profile account and contribute to the wider commercial strategy. Main responsibilities Attend site scoping visits, surveys, and pre-start meetings to support accurate project set-up Prepare detailed cost plans and budget estimates, ensuring smooth handover to delivery teams Manage multiple live projects, maintaining robust commercial control and contract compliance Liaise with clients' commercial teams to align on financial matters and project progress Issue subcontract enquiries, analyse quotes, and place orders in line with agreed terms Negotiate subcontractor terms to drive best value and minimise risk Provide ongoing commercial support to project managers and site teams Prepare and manage bills of quantities, valuations, variations and interim/final accounts Monitor project performance with regular Cost Value Reconciliation (CVR) reporting Ensure commercial compliance with all main contracts and subcontracts Manage and submit client variations promptly while challenging subcontractor claims as needed Optimise cash flow through accurate forecasting, proactive valuation and timely invoicing Support strategic improvements across the commercial function and contribute to post-project reviews Knowledge/Experience Required Minimum 3 years’ experience in a Quantity Surveyor role within the M&E or wider construction industry Background in retail construction or fit-out (highly desirable) Sound understanding of JCT contracts and working within schedule of rates/framework agreements Experience producing detailed commercial reports, budgets, and cash flow forecasts Ability to interpret drawings/specs for take-offs and cost planning Solid working knowledge of Microsoft Office (particularly Excel) and commercial software Strong awareness of construction methods and materials used in M&E projects Proven ability to identify and manage commercial risks effectively Qualifications GCSEs (or equivalent) including English and Maths (essential) Degree, HND/HNC or BTEC in Quantity Surveying, Construction Management, or related field (preferred) Working towards or qualified with RICS (Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors) or CIOB (Chartered Institute of Building) (desirable) Benefits: 25 days holiday plus bank holidays A day’s ‘birthday leave’ to be taken within your birthday month Opportunity to buy or sell up to 3 days holiday Opportunity for hybrid working Ability to participate in the Octopus EV salary sacrifice scheme Ability to participate in the Cycle to Work Scheme Employee Assistance Programme Healthshield cash plan with discounts on high street stores Free external financial advice – offering support for mortgages, pensions and insurances Enhanced family friendly pay Free tea, coffee and fruit on all sites ∗ Subject to eligibility Opportunity to be involved with: Group Colleague Board Quarterly Corporate Events/Charity Involvement Sigma is committed to providing colleagues with opportunities to progress their career, supported by a range of training and development activities and interventions’ If you think you’ve got what it takes to join our growing, winning team we’d love you to hear from you.
