The Senior Safeguarding Nurse / Practitioner role is a visible and knowledgeable resource and support to patient-facing staff across the Trust for safeguarding children’s concerns. They will work alongside trust staff developing safeguarding competence and confidence with a focus on improving patient outcomes.
They will use their own robust knowledge to support staff through advice, guidance, supervision, and training keeping the working together to safeguard children framework at the forefront of their interactions.
They will contribute to the safeguarding agenda through the provision of evidence-based safeguarding advice, support, guidance, supervision, and training for all disciplines of staff across all trust sites.
Main duties of the job
* To work with all staff to provide support, advice, and expert guidance to assist in exercising duties and responsibilities for safeguarding of children/young people, adults, and their families where appropriate.
* To deputise for the Operational Lead Nurse for Safeguarding Children, providing specialist advice, support, and supervision across the Trust.
* Support Trust staff in the management of all aspects of complex and serious safeguarding children/young people activities including, for example, attendance at strategy discussions and complex case meetings.
* To be a competent, knowledgeable, and visible practitioner, ensuring the provision of high-quality safeguarding children support for frontline practitioners.
* Deliver safeguarding supervision to clinical frontline staff.
* Assess, implement, plan, and evaluate care and interventions for service users with complex safeguarding needs.
* To complete safeguarding audits as per the Safeguarding team audit plan.
* Maintain and develop own levels of specialist knowledge and skills in relation to safeguarding children/young people and clinical practice.
* Work collaboratively with partner agencies as set out in the Working Together to Safeguard Children (2023) guidance.
* To escalate safeguarding concerns, internally and externally as per local, regional, and National directive.

* Attend as required all appropriate safeguarding meetings, to advocate on behalf of service users, acting as a support to staff and as a representative of the Trust.
* Utilising the Think Family approach to support managers and staff in the delivery of high-quality safeguarding care throughout the journey of the child, young person whilst in Hospital.
* To assist with the development, implementation, and evaluation of action plans and recommendations of lessons learned from Rapid Reviews, Children Safeguarding Practice reviews, Safeguarding Adult Reviews, and Domestic Homicide reviews.

Knowledge and Experience
* Advanced knowledge of the legislation, statutory guidance, and best practice for child safeguarding and child protection processes.
* Current experience of working with children/young people.
* Proven communication and influencing skills.
* Strong ability using a variety of Information technology systems, including Microsoft Word, Excel spreadsheets, TEAMS, and other systems to support team activity and data collection and analysis.
* Skilled with using creative approaches for providing staff supervision and support.
* Experience of developing other staff/junior staff and supporting their practice.
* Experience of representing the child’s voice in decision-making processes.
* Experience of working in a multidisciplinary team and with multiagency approaches.
* Excellent knowledge of current local and national safeguarding issues for children.
* Proven ability with negotiating and collaborating on complex issues.
Skills and Abilities
* Ability to communicate well and build good working relationships with multi-disciplinary colleagues.
* Ability to analyse assessment information and identify risks of harm and abuse holding the best interests of the child at the centre of all decisions.
* Ability to translate research evidence and policy into training and development for a range of staff.
* Ability to work for and as part of a team. Clear understanding of autonomy, boundaries, and escalation in relation to safeguarding roles.
* Ability to manage an unpredictable working day and reprioritise activity at short notice.
* Ability to support staff through safeguarding supervision and structured reflective practice to improve the outcomes for children.
* Skilled in using Microsoft Office applications to support recording and analysis of service information (i.e., Excel) and development of training materials (i.e., PowerPoint).
Qualifications and Training
* Registered Children’s Nurse or Registered Practitioner.
* Evidence of professional and managerial development.
* Postgraduate qualification to Degree level or working towards or equivalent experience in relevant area of practice.
* Training Qualification.
