Job Duties
As a Transportation Operations Supervisor, or Supervisor Bridge Tunnel for the Hampton Roads Harbor Tunnels, you will be an integral part of our management team and will learn transportation management, traffic control, operations and emergency response.
The Transportation Operations Supervisor will provide program direction (plan, monitor and evaluate) for assigned shift; provide fiscal stewardship and lead a team by providing effective human resource management expertise. In this role you will supervise operational functions such as traffic control, public safety, communications, disabled vehicles removal and enforcement of facility regulations during an assigned shift.
VDOT is a 24/7 operation. This position is designated as essential and, as such, all duties associated with this job are required during emergency situations which may include but are not limited to inclement weather, disaster response and emergency operations. This is a shift position; therefore you will be required to work shift schedules (6am-2pm, 2pm-10pm, 10pm-6am) and flexible hours, days, nights, weekends, and/or holidays. In addition, this position is subject to an annual bid. Transportation Operations Supervisors will perform their duties both indoors and outdoors.
Minimum Qualifications
1. Demonstrated success communicating effectively at all levels in an organization, both orally and in writing.
2. Demonstrated success compiling concise, accurate reports and drawing accurate conclusions.
3. Demonstrated proficiency interpreting, explaining and applying regulations, policies and procedures and best practices.
4. Demonstrated success administering Human Resources policies, procedures and programs (i.e. hiring, performance management, employee development, discipline and termination)
5. Demonstrated success managing conflict to an amicable conclusion is a must.
6. Proficiency in computer software (i.e. Microsoft Office Suite, Windows based software, Sharepoint).
7. Demonstrated success providing good customer service to both internal and external customers/stakeholders.
8. Must possess or be able to obtain a valid driver’s license.
Additional Considerations
9. Previous experience leading and directing the work of others
10. Emergency Operations experience (i.e. military, fire & rescue, police, manufacturing/production)
11. Demonstrated ability operating traffic management, telecommunications and audio equipment or similar equipment
12. Strong decision making skills. Demonstrated success analyzing complex problems and developing effective and viable solutions
13. Experience working in 24/7 operations
14. Knowledge of safety and security principles and practices and emergency response plans
15. Bachelor’s degree preferred; equivalent experience or training may substitute for education; or 4 years of supervisory/leadership experience from industries such as military, manufacturing, transportation and logistics.
