University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Trust is one of the largest acute hospital Trusts in England serving the populations of Birmingham and Solihull. The Trust is composed of four main hospital sites: Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEHB), Heartlands Hospital, Good Hope Hospital, and Solihull Hospital (HGS). The department offers a full diagnostic immunology service serving the large autoimmunity, allergy, and immunodeficiency population of the region on the Heartlands site. The annual Immunology workload is 500,000 tests.
This is an exciting opportunity for a self-motivated individual to take on this stimulating role within a dynamic team in our busy and progressive department. We are seeking to recruit a HCPC registered biomedical scientist with a completed IBMS Immunology Specialist Portfolio, a relevant MSc, and experience in a busy Immunology laboratory. Candidates who only have an Immunology Specialist Portfolio or relevant MSc with substantial Immunology laboratory experience will be considered for an Annex 21 developmental Band 7 role.
The laboratory is led by a Consultant Clinical Scientist and the team includes one principal clinical scientist, three band 7 clinical scientists, an Immunology laboratory manager (BMS), three band 7 BMS, nine BMS with other support staff, and one STP. The team works closely with the adult and paediatric Clinical Immunology team, which includes eight consultants and four registrars across the four hospital sites.
Main duties of the job
The role includes management of one of the sections within Immunology, including sample workflow and prioritisation, reagent ordering, and management of personnel. The post holder will be involved in the quality management system, including document management, IQC and EQA procedures, as well as troubleshooting assay poor performance. Candidates are also expected to take a role in assay validation/verification procedures and contribute to reading/reporting of results.
The post-holder will contribute to audits, teaching, and training programmes within the department.
The department runs a full repertoire of Immunology assays including:
1. Immunochemistry (Sebia Octa and Hydrasys the Binding Site Optilite)
2. Autoimmunity/Allergy (Phadia ImmunoCAP, QL3000, DS2 and Euroimmun Blot One)
3. Immunophenotyping and functional cellular assays utilising Beckman Aquios and Navios flow cytometers
4. Interferon gamma release assays (TSPOT and QuantiFERON)
The Immunology laboratory runs a 08:00--20:00 service Mon-Fri. We are UKAS accredited to ISO 15189 standards, MHRA approved, and IBMS accredited for training, and we support Continuous Professional Development. Encouragement is given to attend and participate in both internal and external lectures/seminars.
