We are looking to recruit a dedicated and enthusiastic Animal Care Assistant (ACA) to help in the smooth running of the clinic. The ideal candidate would be kind, caring, compassionate, outgoing and have a passion for animal welfare.
About the role
The role would be of particular interest for someone who is keen to pursue a career in Veterinary nursing. The role would primarily be based at the Overdale branch in Buxton but we occasionally help out at our partner practices. We are looking for someone who has some experience in animal handling and welfare, but onsite training will be provided when necessary. The successful applicant will be mentored by the nursing team until they are ready to work more independently, but help will always be given when needed. For the right candidate, career progression within the team will be possible.
Duties will include animal handling and restraint, inpatient care, general cleaning and maintenance, and peri-operative support for surgical cases. Occasional reception cover may be required, for which training would be provided.
Rota and salary
The role will be on a 12 month fixed term contract, with the prospect of extending after that time. This is a full time role working 37.5 hours over 5 days per week, with the clinic open between 8:00am – 7:00pm. The salary for this role is £22,405 DOE plus benefits.

Overdale Veterinary Centre is based in the picturesque spa town of Buxton, nestled in the Peak District. The clinic has a classical feel about it, with the ethos of providing a high standard of clinical care to our clients across the board. We have 3 small animal consulting rooms (2 vet and 1 nurse), one dedicated operating theatre, an imaging suite (digital x-ray, ultrasound and endoscopy plus Dental x-ray arriving soon...), prep area with dental facilities and in house laboratory. We have separate cat and dog kennels.
Our team and culture
We are currently a 4FT and 2PT vet team ranging from 1 year to 18 years of experience. We have small animal medicine certificate holders, with another in progress. This gives a wide breadth of skills and experience which enables us to support and mentor new additions. We are a nurse training practice and have 3 FT & 4 PT qualified nurses, with several ECC certificate holders. On reception we have a dedicated team who manage the front of house.
With the Peak District literally on your doorstep you can undertake a wide variety of outdoor pursuits in your leisure time, including rock climbing, cycling, angling and walking. Buxton also benefits from the Buxton Opera House which has a very good line up. If you are missing the big city then Manchester is only a short train ride away. There is a lot to do in Buxton and we are a very social practice and frequently have nights out, BBQs and weekend activities.
Our ideal candidate
We are looking for a kind caring & enthusiastic Animal Care assistant who has a passion for working with animals. Good communication skills are a key asset for any candidate to be successful, as is the ability to work well within a team. Qualifications: At least 4 GCSEs at grades 9 to 4 (A to C), including English, Maths and Science.
