An opportunity has arisen for a 12 month secondment/fixed term contract to join the small and friendly team in Clinic 24, the Early Pregnancy and Emergency Gynaecology Unit within the Rosie Hospital, Cambridge. This clinic offers a 7 day service to women in early pregnancy and to those requiring emergency outpatient gynaecological care.
This is a Band 6 Sister/Charge Nurse role working within a very busy Unit where you will be able to work both autonomously and collaboratively in the triage and assessment of women attending Clinic 24. You will work closely with members of the MDT (both inpatient and outpatient) and the Obstetric Ultrasound Department.
We are searching for an experienced Gynaecology Nurse who is able to undertake excellent clinical care, in an outpatient setting looking after women attending with early pregnancy complications or emergency acute gynaecology.
You should be proficient in skills such as telephone triage, venepuncture & cannulation, drug administration and contraceptive administration as well as counselling and participating in the care of women attending for termination / miscarriage management.
Main duties of the job
To assist the Lead Nurse in the overall management of Early pregnancy Unit (Clinic 24) and co-ordination of a multi-disciplinary team to ensure a safe and effective standard of patient care.
SPECIFIC CLINICAL SKILLS & RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Obtain verbal consent for any invasive procedure.
2. Obtain written consent for surgical and medical management of failed early pregnancies.
3. Obtain written consent for medical and surgical termination of pregnancy within the Termination of Pregnancy Referral Clinic.
4. Perform vaginal and speculum examinations.
5. Take vaginal and cervical swabs and cervical smears.
6. Remove 'products of conception' from the cervical os if identified.
7. Take any necessary blood samples to aid diagnosis.
8. Cannulate patients, as guided by locally agreed protocols/guidelines.
9. Work within the Pregnancy Advisory Service.
10. Provide advice, planning and administration of Long Acting Reversible Contraception (LARC).
11. Develop the theoretical and practical understanding on the administration of methotrexate for medical management of ectopic pregnancy/pregnancy of unknown location.
12. Assess early obstetric ultrasound results in relation to other assessment findings, and where necessary treat or refer as per protocols/guidelines.
