Sionic Energy is an innovative, energy storage technology company with more than 10 years developing breakthrough products for the Li-ion battery markets. Utilizing novel materials and cell designs, the Company has recently developed a revolutionary low cost, high-capacity silicon anode that enables high-capacity silicon batteries to enter mainstream markets. Delivering a very disruptive performance jump in energy density, at lower cost, with increased safety for E-mobility, consumer electronics, and aviation markets, the Company is well positioned to rapidly commercialize this technology with seamless integration into the existing Li-ion manufacturing eco-system. The Company is supported by top-tier venture capital firms and strategic investors that, alongside its previous product partnerships with leading automotive, mobile device, battery, and battery companies, provides the foundation for rapid growth.
The Position:
The position of Process Engineer – Battery Cell Build Lead is a critical role that leads the prototype cell build operations at Sionic Energy. The Company is developing and scaling its novel silicon anode lithium-ion battery technology, and this role is central to that initiative. Battery cell prototypes are used for technology development, product validation and customer deployment. The role’s primary focus is to lead a team of Battery Assembly Operators to coordinate, prepare materials, set up equipment and build lithium-ion battery cells while implementing and maintaining key process and quality control methods. Lithium-ion battery cells are built using hand assembly and semi-automated pouch cell stacking, welding and heat-sealing equipment. The Process Engineer will work in a research and product development setting with core functions of the role including, but not limited to the following:
* Set up, operate and maintain semi-automated lithium-ion cell manufacturing equipment for prototype cell formats ranging (80mAh single layer to 20Ah multilayered pouch cells)
* Design and develop tooling and manufacturing fixtures targeting high quality and repeatable processes
* Build upon and lead implementation of existing APQP (Advanced Product Quality Process) documentation including Process flow, PFMEA and Control Plans
* Develop and maintain standard operating procedures (SOPs), Work Instructions and Travelers for the build processes and quality documentation
* Support team with hands on lithium-ion cell fabrication and management of the process flow
* Promote a safe work environment and enforce PPE, cleanliness and 6S practices
* Work with stakeholders in the company to schedule and execute battery builds as prioritized by Research and Product Development
* Ensure quality standards are well defined, communicated and executed to the Cell Build Team
* Routinely work in clean / dry room or glove box environment
* Maintain a continuous improvement register and continually drive optimization of the processes
* Chart and track key process characteristic and quality metrics
* Devise lab-scale experiments to validate critical processing methods for lithium-ion cell prototyping such as thermal heat sealing, ultrasonic metal welding, die cutting and vacuum drying
* Support build and maintenance of equipment to ensure proper operation, and use
* Maintain manufacturing quality database and update and communicate results
* Train Operators in new and existing cell build and manufacturing operations
* Be dedicated to safety practices to ensure prevention of workplace injury or accidents
Qualifications:
The following qualifications will be instrumental in determining a successful candidate for this role.
* BS degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Chemical or related technical field
* CAD experience in SolidWorks or similar software to generate 3D models and 2D component drawings
* 3-5+ years working experience in a research, product or manufacturing role
* 3-5+ years in a lithium-ion battery or electrochemical product development role a plus
* Experience with automated or semi-automated manufacturing processes and control
* Proficiency using computer functions to document, record and present data
* Exceptional organizational, verbal, and communication skills
* Motivated and driven to solve problems, work with a high level of detail and care and continually improve processes required to reduce variation and strive for zero defects
* Ability to work in dry room and glove box environments while standing for an extended period
* Strong work ethics and positive working attitude
* Experience in ISO9001 manufacturing environment a plus
* Ability to lift and maneuver up to 30lbs
