Senior Band 6 Staff Nurse - Paediatrics (Dolphin/Lion Ward)
Band 6 staff nurse is to act as a role model in accordance to the trust behaviour framework and values, exhibiting excellence through practice and collaborating on a daily basis with the MDT team for best outcomes for our patient group. The role covers an acute medical pediatric ward treating children from birth to 16 years old, including Oncology, Safeguarding, eating disorders, HDU, orthopaedics, ENT, surgical and other childhood illnesses and accidents. This role includes coordinating, which requires experience in leading a shift, managing flow through departments, recognizing the deteriorating child, and supporting the ward in trust initiatives as well as ward-level management of junior staff and quality improvement projects.
Main duties of the job
1. Provide a leadership role model and demonstrate specialist knowledge and high standards of clinical practice, providing support where necessary.
2. Co-ordinate shifts, manage ward flow, and problem-solve in a fast-paced environment.
3. Manage and monitor workload, patient acuity, and ensure safe standards on a daily basis.
4. Support junior members of the team, providing excellent leadership, support, and guidance through monitoring, planning, and evaluation of individualized care, ensuring appraisals are up to date and engaging with staff retention.
5. Support the ward sister in ward-level management and trust initiatives.
6. Be a positive team player with empathy and compassion, able to work effectively within a MDT team, with skills to work under pressure, delegate well, and promote a clean, safe environment for patients and their families.
7. Ensure the safeguarding and welfare of all patients and their families, ensuring good communication between healthcare professionals for the patient's individual needs.

Job responsibilities
1. Understand the workload targets set for the clinical area and demonstrate commitment to their delivery, ensuring that others are alerted to quality issues.
2. Assist in monitoring and maintaining the health, safety, and security of self and others in the work area.
3. Identify and assess risks in work activities, assisting in developing strategies to manage these effectively.
4. Ensure the team works within risk management/occupational health legislation and Trust procedures.
5. Contribute to the implementation and development of the service, being aware of new evidence and research in both general and specialist fields.

8. In the absence of the Ward/Department Manager, act as a signatory to authorize staffing requests to be considered by the Agency Control Group.
