Job description
The University of Portsmouth is a global employer of choice where exceptional people create, share and apply knowledge that makes a difference.
Experience the pride of being part of a select group – one of only four universities in the south-east of England to achieve a prestigious Gold rating in the Teaching Excellence Framework. Additionally, we proudly rank among the top 140 universities globally in the Times Higher Young University World Rankings.
Ambition, Responsibility and Openness drive our every endeavour. Join our esteemed institution with a proven track record of success, and where dedication to excellence is key. We want people to make their mark in a professional community that truly values people, innovation, and achievement.
The Role:
The School of Psychology, Sport and Health Science is seeking to appoint a Senior Research Associate, for a fixed term of three years.
The Senior Research Associate will work under the guidance of the research leader ultimately responsible for the project (Dr Sophie Milward) to carry out research, including seeking ethical approval, recruitment of participants, quantitative data collection and analysis. The postholder will partly oversee two local Research Assistants in Uganda and the Republic of Korea, respectively. The post will be based in Portsmouth, but will require travel (fully funded) to Uganda and the Republic of Korea, as well as to conferences.
The Project
To truly understand the human mind, we need to embrace the diversity and complexity of human social interactions. However, our current understanding is vastly restricted to interactions between just two people, and within Western, Educated, Industrialised, Rich, and Democratic (WEIRD) cultures. This project will break from tradition by identifying the mechanisms we use when faced with a group of diverse co-actors with multiple different, interacting relationships, as is often the case in real-life. We will use ‘task co-representation’ as a test case, providing a springboard for research on other social cognitive mechanisms to capture the true complexity of human sociality. This project will use experimental methods to measure error rates and response times from multiple co-actors in a Joint Simon task, across 3 cultures (Uganda, Republic of Korea and UK).
The Senior Research Associate will contribute to the conduct of the study and to the analysis of the data in conjunction with other members of the project team. They may be required to manage the progress of the project in line with the project terms of reference. The postholder will contribute to writing papers for research journals, presenting findings at conferences and contribute to the growing research culture and wider academic work of the School.
Hybrid working may be available 2-3 days per week from home. There is a requirement for occasional overseas travel and weekend working.
Interviews are anticipated to be held 28 February 2025.
For an informal discussion about the role please contact Sophie Milward, Principal Investigator: sophie.milward@port.ac.uk
