Job Introduction
BBC West is looking for a self-starting multimedia journalist to work in its Story Hub in Bristol. The West is a busy news patch, and we are looking for someone who can bring important regional stories to life, understands what makes a lead story, and has the tenacity to deliver it across online, social media, TV, and radio.
This is primarily a production role, although there will be opportunities for online and potentially on-air reporting. You’ll be comfortable working across all our platforms.
Main Responsibilities
Our journalists research, write, and often film stories for our online news pages, social media channels, TV breakfast, lunchtime, flagship 18:30 programmes, and radio output. You’ll collaborate with correspondents and reporters to write online articles, produce stories, and film and produce items independently.
With its diverse communities, rural landscape, and urban centres, we want to recruit a journalist who can reflect the audiences we serve. You need to understand what matters to the different communities in the West—from big cities like Bristol, Gloucester, and Bath to rural residents—as well as those who follow us on social media.
You will be based in Bristol but may occasionally be asked to work in the field or from our bases in Taunton, Gloucester, Swindon, or Bristol. You will spend time working in an office and remotely according to business needs. Please note, you will be expected to work at weekends as well as early or late shifts as part of the role.
Are you the right candidate?
The ideal candidate will meet the following criteria:
1. Considerable journalism experience
2. Ability to originate stories with strong writing skills
3. Tenacious attitude to secure contacts/leads for story development
4. Ability to work well across the newsroom, in a team and independently
5. A good understanding of the West region and its communities
