Main duties of the job We are looking for a motivated candidate for the role of Junior Fellow in Surgical Critical Care. The post will provide training and experience in critical care medicine at a large tertiary teaching hospital and is aimed at resident doctors who wish to advance their careers and expand their skills in anaesthesia, perioperative, and intensive care medicine. The surgical critical care unit at University Hospital Southampton is a ten-bedded level two unit admitting approximately 1500 major surgical patients each year. The unit is overseen by a team of 23 intensive care consultants. Alongside clinical duties there will be opportunities to participate in departmental simulation, spend time working on the General Intensive Care Unit (a major trauma centre), and engage in audit and quality improvement projects. There is a twice weekly teaching programme and opportunities to engage in local and national research projects. Attendance at ward rounds is expected. Routine work is shared among the junior medical staff. You will be expected to adjust organ support measures after receiving appropriate training. Attention to record keeping must be meticulous. It is expected that clinical handover to colleagues must be comprehensive. A comprehensive induction is provided with emphasis on learning practical procedures using the simulator. Teaching is organised weekly and attendance at the multidisciplinary weekly meeting is also encouraged. Opportunity to gain experience in teaching and improving presentation skills will be provided. You will have the opportunity to participate in the clinical research trials and audits currently underway. Support for study leave will be given. Study and Training: There is a well-equipped postgraduate medical centre at UHS in the South Block. There are educational activities almost every day for all groups of graduates at all stages of their careers. There are also departmental teaching sessions and conferences - programme of Postgraduate Medical Education in the Wessex Region can be obtained from the Postgraduate Centre Administrator. The Southampton General Hospital Postgraduate Medical Centre houses the Regional Adviser in General Practice while the Postgraduate Dean is based at Otterbourne in Winchester.
