Job Description
An opportunity has arisen for a Radiological Protection Engineer within AtkinsRéalis' expanding Decommissioning Services team. The successful candidate will report to Senior Engineer/RPA and will take a leading role in the radiological protection aspects of the projects on which Decommissioning Services are engaged.
The RP specific work on projects currently being delivered include:
1. The provision of high-level technical advice to client sites.
2. Detailed technical design and review of products, technology and processes including modification of RP arrangements.
3. The provision of RP support and oversight of practical delivery of operational decommissioning work (e.g. size reduction of redundant components etc.).
4. Whilst the main roles and responsibilities will be based around radiological protection, there will be significant cross over with radioactive waste, therefore flexibility is essential.
Requirements:
Qualifications:
1. Bachelor's Degree in a relevant subject, or demonstrable equivalent ability and experience. Equivalent qualifications will be considered.
2. Appropriate membership of professional body.
Essential Criteria:
1. Significant experience in operational radiological protection; quality of experience is more relevant than the number of years.
2. Evidence of providing advice on compliance with IRR'17 (and/or IRR'99).
3. Able to lead teams within RP discipline.
4. Able to work within a multi-disciplinary team.
5. Able to delegate to, direct and support junior staff in their work and development.
6. Able to effectively manage stakeholders.
7. Able to technically justify approaches and see those through to successful implementation on plant.
8. Able to produce high quality, concise technical reports.
9. Able to influence others to implement improvements.
10. Able to work without supervision, including managing own workload.
11. Able to use standard Microsoft Office tools effectively.
12. Able to obtain an SC security clearance.
13. Able to travel.
14. Hold a full driving license.
Desirable Criteria:
1. Experience of decommissioning.
2. Experience of managing teams.
3. Experience of developing or aiding Safety Case development.
4. RPA portfolio in development (RPA certification not required).
Responsibilities:
Project specific responsibilities will vary, but high-level responsibilities are listed below:
1. Take a leading role within the Radiological Protection team, acting as the responsible point of contact for radiological protection on project work, providing expert-level advice, support and guidance on radiological issues across defined projects.
2. Support in the development of Project Execution Plans to ensure a fit-for-purpose approach is taken to each project.
3. Seeking out potential innovations to projects and advising clients and/or project teams on lean delivery options.
4. Directing and supporting Graduate and Assistant RP Engineers and other junior staff as required to meet project aims and their personal development targets.
5. Developing RP arrangements for projects, including documentation such as:
1. Risk Assessments.
2. Radiological Design Document.
3. Critical Examinations.
4. Dose Estimates.
5. Local Rules & Contingency Plans.
6. Investigation reports.
6. Review of radiological monitoring data for operational packages of work.
7. Liaise with inspectors and regulators during audits and investigations as required.
8. Delivery of ALARP assessments.
9. Support BAT assessments and other optioning processes.
10. Advise on radioactive waste aspects of project as required with support from other specialists, if necessary.
The Individual:
We are seeking a confident, capable individual with a high level of initiative to take on an essential role within our radiological protection team. Reporting to the Senior RP Engineer/RPA, the successful person will act as a role model to Graduate and Assistant RP Engineers. This person will demonstrate technical proficiency, a sound understanding of the practicalities of implementing specified solutions, and professionalism in all aspects of their work.
The successful applicant will be willing to challenge the status-quo, where appropriate; a questioning attitude is vital to long term success. They will be able to identify underlying technical points which often govern and delay decisions, and use this knowledge to implement safe, compliant solutions.
This position would suit a well-established health physicist/radiological protection engineer whom is ready for a new challenge, or someone ready to take a step up into a more senior position. It is not necessary for you to hold an RPA certificate to hold this position, but it is expected that you will be achieve RPA certification whilst in this role.

Additional Information:
This role may require security clearance and offers of employment will be dependent on obtaining the relevant level of clearance. If this is necessary, it will be discussed with you at interview. The vetting process is delivered by United Kingdom Security Vetting (UKSV) and may require candidates to provide proof of residency in the UK of 5 years or longer.
