About the Role
We are seeking an experienced and enthusiastic Curator to join our Exhibitions & Public Programmes Team.
It is a very exciting time to join the Royal Institute of British Architects, as we embark on the ambitious House of Architecture programme, which gives us the opportunity to enhance our public engagement, working with partners and increasing our activities in Liverpool and in the Regions. We aim to engage a wider audience and inspire them with the impact that architecture has on our lives, our communities, and our planet.
The Curator plays a key part in the ideation, research, management, and implementation of audience-centred, thought-provoking, and inspiring programmes. Projects include collection-based historical and contemporary exhibitions, as well as new commissions, talks, and online engagement. A particular focus is also on working with partners to develop and deliver multifaceted projects and commissions.
The role is based in Liverpool and works closely with the London team to deliver projects at RIBA North in Liverpool, in London, or at other venues, and online. You will work collaboratively with other departments, also co-curating with other RIBA curators or external partners, depending on projects.
What are we looking for?
* Experience in researching, planning, and managing all stages of exhibitions and programmes, delivering on time and to a high standard.
* Ability and experience to work creatively to establish concepts, key messages, and learning outcomes, shaping content to develop narratives.
* Experience in identifying appropriate interpretation methods, developing tone of voice and text hierarchies, and selecting objects, so that each exhibition and display connects with our audiences.
* Experience of working within a cultural organisation, with understanding and experience of contemporary curating strategies for exhibitions and programmes.
* Experience of working with external contributors and the Collections Team to compile and research object lists and prepare all necessary working documents to meet planning deadlines.
* Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work collaboratively on projects with internal colleagues and external partners, maintaining positive and effective relationships with a network of creative contributors, collectors, curators, scholars, members, visitors, etc.
* Demonstrable experience in creating/overseeing design and concept briefs and in working with designers, writers, and creative agencies in interpreting and realising those briefs whether in physical or digital formats.
* Experience in following an audience-focused approach, including evaluation, in shaping project outcomes.
* Strong presentation and writing skills; ability and experience of writing effectively to diverse audiences and delivering talks.
* High level of administrative, organisational, and planning skills.
* Ability to manage and monitor budgets.
* Creative, resourceful, and flexible; desire and ability to think differently and seek opportunities to successfully work with partners to expand RIBA’s cultural programmes and ensure its highest standard in delivery and artistic reputation.
* Ability to multi-task, coordinating multiple projects simultaneously.
* A graduate degree in a relevant discipline or demonstrable expertise and experience in a relevant area of architecture, architectural history, design, critical theory, etc.
* A passion for engaging the wider public with architecture and its impact on society and individuals.
