Overall Purpose of the Role
The role of Head of Clinical Negligence is pivotal to the success of the Client. The job demands an excellent technical understanding of both clinical negligence claims and litigation and to have an ability to manage a high workload whilst at the same time being able to develop and lead/manage others.
The role holder must be able to lead, manage, train and motivate the department. You will report directly to the Operations Director and work closely with them in the development of the Operations and continued growth of the department overall.
Job context
The role of Head of Clinical Negligence will demand an excellent understanding of all aspects of litigation in clinical negligence cases. The role holder must have an ability to manage a high workload whilst at the same time being able to manage, motivate, train and develop their team to ensure maximum financial performance is achieved.
The role holder will be responsible for managing their own caseload and the supervision of all caseloads within the team, taking all technical queries and referrals arising in the department and provide advice.
In addition, the role holder will have to work closely with the Operations Director to assist in developing current systems and procedures and innovating new ways of working to ensure the department works in the most efficient manner and has an ability to adapt to an ever changing market.
You will further be responsible for pro-actively reporting to the Operations Director management information, to drive performance in the department.
In addition, the role holder will work closely with our in house marketing department and Operations Director to drive new cases into the department.
Principal accountabilities
1. To be able to meet both individual and departmental targets
• To be responsible for the day to day productivity levels within the department
• To be responsible for the day to day management of all staff within the litigation department
• To manage, influence and motivate staff associated with performance issues.
• To be responsible for recruiting and training new staff
• Provide ongoing training to existing staff
• Assist in the implementation of strategies to improve performance and closely liaise with the Operations Director to continually drive improvement and efficiencies
• To be responsible for the adherence to workflows and company processes and procedures
• To provide management information and reports for the Leadership Team on a regular basis
• Be responsible for all file reviews and audits of Legal Advisors within the litigation team
• Be responsible for day to day referrals within the team
• Work closely with our marketing department to drive new cases into the department

Job knowledge, Skills & Experience
3. At least 5 years’ experience as a people manager
• 10 + years’ experience of dealing with Clinical Negligence claims
• 10 + years’ litigation experience
• Proven track record of dealing with clinical negligence cases
• Excellent knowledge of current case law
• Proven track record of settling clinical negligence cases
• Proven track record in performance management
• Experience of handling a high workload
• Experience of working with process flows and case management systems
• Excellent customer service skills
• Have a good track record of meeting and exceeding targets
• Strong IT & Systems knowledge, experience with Proclaim would be an advantage
