Job overview
Our School
Salesian is a co-educational 11-18 Catholic comprehensive school and is part of the Xavier Catholic Education Trust.
Standards at the school are very high and students achieve exceptionally well. In last year’s GCSE examinations 47% of all grades were 7-9, 92% 4-9 and our overall Progress 8 was +0.96. At A’ level 32% of grades were A*-A and 68% A*-B.
The school has 1400 students and is situated on two sites approximately one mile apart, near to the centre of Chertsey. The main school is situated at Guildford Road and our Sixth Form College has 467 students on its own site at Highfield Road.
A great deal of emphasis is placed on the co-curricular life at Salesian with numerous opportunities for students to engage in activities - drama, sport, music, exchanges, away days, Duke of Edinburgh, retreats, and trips.
We work hard to ensure that staff and students are well looked after, while also setting high expectations for everyone at the school. When you balance challenge and support, great teaching occurs, leading to a heavily oversubscribed school where parents support our mission.
Salesian was designated as a Teaching School in September 2014 and now operates as a Teaching School Hub, offering exciting professional development and school-to-school support activities. Since 2015, we have been accrediting our own trainee teachers as part of the Teach South East SCITT partnership.
Candidates are welcome to contact the school for more information about specific departments or to arrange a visit. We take recruitment seriously and aim to find the best staff for our students.
God bless,
Paul Gower | Headteacher

The English Department at Salesian
The English Department is dynamic, progressive, and has Learning and Teaching at the heart of everything it does. We are exceptionally proud of our results: last year 81% of our students achieved 5-9 at GCSE in English Literature, with 43% of these grades being 7-9. In English Language, 76% of our students achieved 5-9, with 30% of these grades being 7-9. At A Level, 86% of students secured an A*-B at English Literature and 44% A*-B for English Language. We are passionate about constantly evaluating and improving our pedagogy and consider ourselves a department eager to drive whole school change.
At Key Stage Three, we teach in mixed ability groups in Year 7 to help all students settle into the school. Year 10 and Year 11 are taught in ability sets, but we maintain a high level of outstanding teaching; we expect every child to aim for top grades, regardless of their class. At Key Stage Four, we currently teach English Language and English Literature using the AQA exam board. We uniquely offer both subjects as separate A-Levels, providing superb CPD opportunities for staff wishing to expand their teaching experience.
As part of Salesian School, we are committed to extra-curricular projects. We have had winners at public speaking competitions and run a debating club that participates in inter-school competitions. Theatre trips are organized at every Key Stage, and we encourage our most able and talented through university lectures. We run a successful mentoring programme between Year 11 and Year 8, as well as Year 10 and Year 7, encouraging confidence in reading and allowing aspiring teachers to develop key skills.
We are committed to teacher training and annually accept PGCE trainees from around London, benefiting from our exceptional training and support. We also host trainees from our own SCITT, Teach South East. We welcome NQTs for further training, believing we benefit from their fresh ideas and creativity as much as they do from our guidance and experience.
The successful applicant should be passionate about teaching English and committed to continually developing their own Learning and Teaching. We are proud of our department at Salesian and look forward to welcoming a passionate colleague to our successful and supportive team.

Salesian School is characterised by the philosophy of the Salesian founder St John Bosco (1815-1888), who stressed high educational standards and sound moral and religious education. He insisted on a friendly atmosphere in schools where community could be fostered. We strive to ensure that every student experiences a happy atmosphere that helps them leave school with confidence and excellent examination results.
It is at the foundation of our values to:
* Develop the whole person - mind, body and spirit
* Ensure relationships are key
* Ensure that all decisions are made in the best interests of the children
* Ensure that everything we do is based on Gospel values
We promise parents and students that we will:
* Ensure that students achieve the best results they are capable of
* Develop the skills and attributes students will need to be successful in the future
* Develop the morals and values of our students to help them lead decent Christian lives and promote these values throughout the world
We believe in our young people, recognizing their equal value to God and to us. We focus on those who stand in special need due to lack of material or emotional security.
We create a joyful atmosphere in which the dignity and worth of each pupil and staff member is recognized, developed, and safeguarded. Our schools are known for their welcoming atmosphere where all feel at home and secure.
We strive to affirm, develop, and challenge the abilities of each individual, preparing young people to be a positive influence in their communities.
Within our Salesian Schools, we foster the spiritual, moral, and religious development of our pupils and celebrate prayer in a way that respects individual freedoms.
We recognize the social and educational tensions that can stretch our staff and undertake to support each other.
We appreciate and respect the work of colleagues in our network of schools within the Diocese and Local Area.
