Job title: Senior/ Principal Traffic & Transport Engineer – active travel
Location: Bristol
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Senior or Principal Transport Engineer to meet the growing portfolio of projects within one of the UK’s leading independent consultancies - a specialist design practice with an integrated approach to Transport, Placemaking and Engineering.
The role will require working across a range of different projects although the focus will initially be on meeting commitments on active travel and placemaking projects which are located across a wide spread of geographies.
The ideal candidate will be educated to degree level or above and will have experience of delivering and project managing small to medium sized commissions with both public and private sector clients with only minimal supervision required. As a confident communicator verbally and in writing, they will be required to present and communicate their ideas clearly and concisely both internally and also to a wide range of external audiences.
Ideally, the applicant should be able to demonstrate a strong interest in active travel and placemaking and have evidence of planning and designing walking and cycling infrastructure at differing levels of granularity – although detailed design expertise is not required for this position.
They will also have:
1. Good understanding of new cycle design standards
2. Good knowledge of Healthy Streets / Streets for All / Streets for People design principles
3. Project Management experience of smaller commissions
4. Expertise in producing clear and unambiguous design proposals – mainly at concept stage
5. Experienced in the use of CAD in the design of horizontal alignments
The following would also be desirable:
1. Experience in Traffic Engineering – specifically the incorporation of active travel and public transport infrastructure with urban street networks
2. Knowledge of S278 / S38 agreements for roads and drainage
3. Experience of engaging with, and negotiating with highway and planning authorities to agree proposed design
4. Practical experience of cycling (utility, leisure or sport)
5. Knowledge of Network Planning techniques, particularly LCWIPs.
6. Knowledge of Low Traffic / Active Neighbourhoods
7. Experience of working with public interest groups and local elected members in some capacity
8. Knowledge of development planning and wider transport planning specialisms
9. Use of software programmes such as GIS, Junctions 10, LINSIG and / or design packages such as Civils3D ADOBE, Illustrator etc
10. The ability to produce technical reports and design specifications and the ability to produce and review fee proposals
11. Experience of the financial management and control of projects and working knowledge of different contract types and procurement options.
