Job Description:
Working hours are Monday - Friday, 9am - 5pm. Occasional Saturdays may be required.
* Register patient details and tests required on the laboratory computer.
* Prepare and receive blood samples where appropriate for analysis.
* Sort and identify specimens received.
* Safely handle and dispose of blood, urine or other body tissues or hazardous chemicals.
* Maintain laboratory and ensure workbenches are clean and tidy.
* Prepare referral samples for external laboratory analysis.
* Advise users of the service on appropriate sample handling protocols.
* Enter test results on the laboratory computer system.
* Use and operate equipment such as centrifuges, automated equipment, pipettes, and computer terminals.
* Unpack and prepare reagents in accordance with the SOPs.
* Deal with telephone inquiries internally.
* Prepare solutions and reagents.
* Dispose of contaminated material including sharps.
* Check stock levels of reagents/equipment/consumables and make sure stock is ordered when they are getting low.
* Maintain good working relations with all members of staff and promote effective teamwork, recognizing other skills and priorities.
* Co-operate with trainers when learning new tasks and contribute to the basic training of others.
Qualifications:
* Scientific knowledge or an interest with Clinical Sciences would be beneficial but not essential.
* Previous experience of Microsoft Office.
* Able to communicate and work within a team.
* Ability to work to deadlines.
* Punctual.
* Ability to work without close supervision.
