We plan to spend £16bn over 10 years, funding new discoveries in life, health, and wellbeing, and taking on three global health challenges: mental health, infectious disease and climate and health.
We are looking for Media Manager to join our team on a Fixed Term Contract.
Where in Wellcome will I be working?
You will be joining our Media Relations team, part of the Corporate Affairs department. Our work focuses on building and sustaining Wellcome's profile, influence and reputation. We help to tell the story, show the impact and give context to Wellcome's mission and work supporting science to improve health for everyone.
In this role your main focus will be planning and delivery of impactful media relations related to our mental health solutions programme and our mission to enable a step change in early interventions for anxiety, depression and psychosis. You will work as part of a wider communications matrix team, supporting integrated, multi-channel communications for the mental health team.
What will I be doing?
As a part of our busy media relations team, you will be working with journalists globally. You will work closely with the mental health communications matrix team and with colleagues in our mental health programme to develop proactive media opportunities and to respond to media enquiries. You will be developing stories and media opportunities to highlight Wellcome's research funding to bring new ways to intervene early in anxiety, depression and psychosis. You will be supporting spokespeople, helping deliver thought leadership across the funding and advocacy work of the programme.
We are looking for someone who can:
1. Plan and deliver strategic proactive media activity - including media briefings, media releases, comment and thought leadership articles.
2. Source and develop impactful research-focused stories that highlight Wellcome's research funding and advocacy work.
3. Support and advise spokespeople for interviews and to respond to reactive opportunities.
4. Collaborate with a cross-functional communications matrix team to deliver compelling media activity as part of an integrated communications effort.
5. Establish and maintain strong media contacts in key markets.
6. Work with colleagues to bring lived experience and diverse voices into our media work.
7. Contribute to a diverse and inclusive culture across the organisation.
Is this the job for me?
We're looking for someone who understands news, has an eye for compelling stories, can write pithy comment and punchy thought leadership and can bring stories and issues to life for our key audiences. You'll be comfortable working collaboratively, but will also be expected to lead planning and delivery of impactful media, often balancing multiple deadlines and helping the team internally understand how we can best use media opportunities.
We are looking for someone who:
1. Experience in media relations and/or journalism.
2. Strong news sense and a track record of delivering strategic and compelling media activity.
3. Excellent written, editing and oral communication skills.
4. Strong analytical skills.
5. Ability to manage competing demands effectively and work to tight deadlines.
6. Knowledge of global mental health and related issues is desirable but not essential.
