The Trainee ACCP will work in the Cardiothoracic Critical Care Unit (CTCCU) undertaking practical assessments in the workplace and theoretical work at University. The two years supernumerary training would include a study day per week.
On completion of training, you will apply to become an ACCP Member of the Faculty of Intensive Care Medicine (FICM), and work as part of the medical workforce in the CTCCU. It is expected that the full MSc will be completed in the third year alongside clinical practice.
The trainee ACCP will follow the FICM curriculum and develop proficiency across the four pillars of Advanced Clinical Practice, namely Clinical, Leadership and Management, Education and Research.

This trainee post is dependent on successful bidding for a NHSE training grant to cover University fees. Confirmation will not be available until April. The successful applicant will commence September in line with the academic year. They will undertake the academic training at Southampton University. The Trainee ACCP will be required to regularly commute to Southampton during term time.
Continued employment and transition into a qualified ACCP post is dependent on successful completion of training. The post holder will transition to Band a when FICM membership and full MSc ACCP is achieved, usually -years from initiation of training.
Main duties of the job
The Trainee ACCP will provide clinical management and care to patients requiring level - care in a role traditionally performed by medical staff. During training a high level of clinical judgement and decision making needs to be developed and achieved. The Trainee ACCP must acknowledge any limitations in their knowledge and skills and must not perform clinical activities they do not feel skilled or competent to perform. The trainee ACCP must act within the formal code of conduct of their present statutory regulator.
The scope of practice for the Trainee ACCP is defined by FICM, addressing both clinical skills and the underpinning knowledge that must be attained, prior to functioning as an Advanced Critical Care Practitioner. The Trainee ACCP will be supervised clinically by the ACCP Local Consultant Clinical Lead (LCL) until all competencies have been achieved to the standard set out by FICM, and as outlined within the curriculum.
