Umbrl aims at making the customer journey as simple as possible while allowing customers to tailor the insurance cover to their needs. We are looking for Lead Engineer to work closely with senior stakeholders to understand business goals and ensure that the development team & technologies used are aligned with these. While you’ll be hands-on to start with, we’re looking for someone who aspires to progress into a more managerial role over the next 18 months. The development team currently includes 6 developers across front-end and back-end. The role is based in London (Chelsea), and we would want you to be in the office at least 3 days a week. Your main responsibilities will include: Collaborating closely with senior stakeholders to understand business requirements and effectively translate them into technical requirements for the development team Planning and documenting comprehensive technical specifications for features or system design, ensuring a clear roadmap for development and implementation Designing, building, and configuring applications to meet business process and application requirements, leveraging your technical expertise and problem-solving skills Directing the development team in all aspects of the software development life cycle, including design, development, coding, testing, and debugging, to deliver high-quality solutions Writing testable, scalable, and efficient code, leading by example, and setting coding standards for the team. We expect you to be a hands-on lead deal engineer Conducting code reviews and providing constructive feedback to ensure code quality and adherence to best practices Managing, mentoring and guiding junior team members, fostering their professional growth, and encouraging the adoption of industry best practices, including recruitment of new developers Ensuring that software quality standards are met by enforcing code standards, conducting rigorous testing, and implementing continuous improvement processes Working closely with management and other stakeholders to document and shape business requirements and translate those into technical requirements the development team can act on Staying updated with the latest technologies and industry trends, continuously enhancing technical skills, and driving innovation within the development team We leverage modern technologies to build robust and scalable solutions: Cloud : Google Cloud Platform (GCP) - Cloud Run, BigQuery, Pub/Sub Infrastructure : Terraform for Infrastructure as Code (IaC) Backend : FastAPI and Python Frontend : Next.js Datastores : PostgreSQL, Redis CI/CD : GitHub Actions Education: Degree in computer science, engineering, or a related field Technical proficiency: expertise in specific programming languages or technologies relevant to the tech stack System architecture Version control Continuous integration and deployment Security best practices Cloud computing Test-driven development Experience: 7 years in software development, with proven success as a technical team leader and project manager in agile organisations or start-ups Problem-solving skills: tackling technical challenges head-on and finding practical solutions. Leadership skills: mentor, coach and manager Communication skills: clear and effective communication with both technical and non-technical stakeholders Project management: familiarity with software development methodologies and project management tools Flexible working: 3 days or more in our great office on the King’s Road in Chelsea and the rest as WFH.
