We have an opportunity for a passionate midwife to join our established team. The successful candidate will take the lead role in delivering the quality, governance and safety agendas across the maternity service, ensuring there is a robust performance management framework in place to deliver on all aspects of safety and clinical governance agendas.
The MQAS Lead Midwife will have a proven breadth of experience in all areas of midwifery. They will be a leader with demonstrable success in quality improvement work, a confident communicator with excellent written and verbal skills, empathetic by nature, and a good listener.
Strong analytical skills are required, with the ability to identify themes and trends within data which warrant further investigation. The candidate will support members of the maternity team at all levels with governance and risk management processes, including supporting with statements, investigations, and potentially coroners inquests. They will need to remain clinically visible and respected, maintaining this by working clinically as required and bleep holding for the unit.
The post holder will be exposed to poor outcomes and bereaved families, needing to manage fluctuations in workload and be an active delegator with the confidence to lead a senior team.
Main duties of the job
They will have lead responsibility for Clinical Governance, Safety and Quality Management to ensure full implementation of the risk management strategy which supports internal reporting and communication across the Trust and to external partners. Responsibilities include:
1. Leading improvements in quality standards across Maternity services.
2. Participating in National benchmarking and clinical validation as required.
3. Monitoring and supporting risk issues and reporting of risk within the department.
4. Promoting and encouraging risk and safety awareness across the area.
5. Using information and learning from incidents to develop practice and ensure the delivery of the highest standards of care.
6. Providing professional and managerial support to the Divisional management team regarding clinical risk, complaints, and quality standards.

Job responsibilities
Clinical responsibilities include:
1. Being an active member of the Clinical Safety and Governance Committee.
2. Providing guidance, support, and professional leadership to all staff within the Directorate.
3. Ensuring robust communication systems across the Division and other departments.
4. Providing appropriate and consistent professional advice to other multi-disciplinary teams.
5. Establishing links with the litigation team, PALS, complaints team, and the Trust Risk Management team.
6. Implementing quality initiatives that improve safety and customer care.
7. Working in accordance with the Nursing and Midwifery Council's rules and standards.
Person Specification
Education & Qualifications
* Active Midwifery registration
* Midwifery degree or extensive experience
* Masters degree or evidence of continuing professional development
* A risk management qualification
Experience
* Extensive and recent clinical experience at a senior level within the NHS
* Demonstrable experience in managing risk
* Evidence of planning and implementing service change
* Prior experience of coordinating serious incident investigations
* Practical experience of Clinical Governance principles
* Experience of managing routine and complex staff management issues
* Excellent communication skills
* Proven track record of staff and budget management
Skills & Knowledge
* Clear understanding of the national and local Healthcare agenda
* Good understanding of CNST/CQC maternity and general standards
* Negotiating and influencing skills
