Job Description:
Join us, be part of more.
We’re more than an energy company. We’re a family of brands revolutionising how we power the planet. We're energisers, a team of 21,000 colleagues working towards a greener, fairer future by creating an energy system that doesn’t rely on fossil fuels, committed to positive change in our communities. Here, you can find purpose, passion, and potential. That’s why working here is #MoreThanACareer. We do energy differently — we make it, store it, move it, sell it, and mend it.
About your team:
You’ll work centrally within our mission control room, aka Centrica’s group functions. From Finance and Data Science to Wellbeing and People teams, this is the engine of our energy system, supporting our Centres of Excellence to power our businesses towards Net Zero by 2050.
We have an opportunity for a Legal Counsel, New Business & Net Zero/Energy to join our Legal, Regulatory Affairs, Ethics & Compliance, and Secretariat Function (LRECS). Reporting to our Associate General Counsel – New Business and Net Zero/Energy, you will play a key role in achieving Centrica’s and the legal function’s objectives.
Location: We work flexibly under our Flexible First arrangements. The successful candidate should be comfortable commuting to our Windsor office weekly and to other locations as needed.
What will you do?
You will support legal work supporting British Gas’s customer-facing businesses, including procurement, partnerships, collaborative arrangements, and energy supply agreements. The role involves balancing pragmatic commercial advice with compliance with energy laws and regulations.
Key responsibilities include:
* Providing high-quality legal and commercial support with appropriate risk awareness.
* Managing operational and regulatory risks, developing policies, training, and guidance.
* Structuring, drafting, negotiating, and facilitating non-standard contracts of major impact.
* Advising senior stakeholders on business decisions, policies, and customer journeys.
* Seeking advice from the wider Legal, Regulatory, Ethics, Compliance, and Secretariat team on legal matters.
* Staying informed of industry laws and regulations and managing risks accordingly.
* Managing external lawyers and third parties for cost-effective advice.
* Building stakeholder relationships within the function and other business units.
Who are we looking for?
We seek a professionally qualified lawyer with demonstrable experience, a flexible approach to diverse legal work, stakeholder management skills, and the ability to prioritize effectively. A strong understanding of UK consumer and commercial law, interest in technology, energy, and net zero, and knowledge of energy regulation are desirable.
* Experience in drafting and negotiating complex contracts.
* Ability to explain complex concepts simply.
* Pragmatic, clear, and solution-focused advice.
* Understanding of regulatory and compliance requirements, balancing risk and commercial goals.
Why should you apply?
We’re a people-focused organization that supports diverse needs. Our total rewards are flexible to support your well-being. Discover why we’re a great place to work and what being part of more means for you.
