Constructive Bio is a VC-backed biotechnology start-up based in Whittlesford, Cambridge. Our breakthrough technology harnesses the power of genome rewriting and genetic code reprogramming to make valuable products that positively impact the world. We will use our platform to turn cells into bio-renewable factories to produce novel molecules that were previously inaccessible to natural biology, with diverse applications in industries spanning healthcare, biological research, materials and electronics.
Constructive Bio is a spinout from Professor Jason Chin's laboratory at the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology in Cambridge. We want to build a team with trust and respect for each other and create a culture of collaboration, openness, curiosity, and scientific excellence.
Overview of the role
We are looking for a talented molecular biologist to join our team. As part of the Synthetic Genomics team, the post holder will work collaboratively with other scientists, engineers and bioinformaticians to further develop our proprietary technologies for genome synthesis and large DNA assembly, which will enable us to create designer organisms with programmable phenotypes. The ideal candidate will have a background in biological engineering and excellent problem-solving skills, as well as a proven track record for designing, executing and documenting experiments. As an early member of the team, you would have the opportunity to make a big impact in the development of our platform.
Responsibilities:
1. Development and deployment of our proprietary technologies for large-scale genome engineering and rewriting.
2. Independent design and execution of experiments for DNA manipulation and assembly, with an emphasis on prokaryotes.
3. Collaborate closely with experimental and computational colleagues to deliver results on time and in alignment with the company's objectives.
4. Stay up to date with the latest developments in genome synthesis and the rewriting of large DNA.
5. Record, analyze and interpret data, regularly communicate progress, results and challenges with the wider R&D team.
Requirements:
1. A PhD degree plus significant experience in Molecular Biology, Microbiology, Biochemistry, Bioengineering or a related field.
2. Proficiency in the design and execution of DNA cloning, including Gibson, GoldenGate assembly or similar.
3. Experience analysing and interpreting next-generation sequencing data (particularly Illumina and/or Oxford Nanopore).
4. Solid understanding of molecular biology techniques for DNA manipulation in prokaryotes, such as base editing, homologous recombination, conjugation, transduction or transposition.
5. Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment.
6. Excellent written and oral communication skills and ability to work collaboratively in a team.
Desirable:
1. Good working knowledge of bacterial genetics, tools for genome annotation and genomic databases.
2. Familiarity with laboratory automation equipment and high-throughput molecular biology workflows.
3. Line management or project management experience.
What's in it for you? Why work at Constructive Bio?
