UK Research and Innovation is a new entity that brings together nine partners to create an independent organisation with a strong voice for research and innovation, more information can be found at www.ukri.org Band MRC - 5 Location London Salary £30,911 - £32,843 plus £5,385 London Allowance per annum Contract Type Permanent Job Type Technical & Scientific Professionals Full Time / Part Time Full Time Job Description Overall Purpose: The aim of this post is to assist the MRC Laboratory of Medical Sciences (LMS) Head of Lab Services and Health & Safety to provide a high level of competent advice to the Director, Head of Operations and Head of Research Environment of the LMS. You will support cutting edge science by monitoring and advising on laboratory health & safety and regulatory compliance issues, specifically working with the LMS staff and other stakeholders. The function of the role is to ensure the safe working environment at the main LMS building and in its ICTEM and Mansfield building laboratories. Please note that this is an on-site role with limited opportunities for home working. Working Relationships: You will report to the LMS Health and Safety Manager, providing general safety support. You will work alongside members of the H&S team (LMS Head of Lab Services/Health & Safety, Health and Safety Manager, Health and Safety Advisor), Research staff, other infrastructure groups (particularly Estates and Lab Services), statutory and other external bodies. Facilitate the following Health & Safety support services: Act as first point of contact for general safety queries Undertake site tours in order to be aware of new and developing health and safety issues, and to allow for ad hoc safety conversations with workers Ensure that Safety Supervisors are appointed in all parts of the LMS, arrange the training they require for the role and provide them with general advice on their duties Organise specialised H&S training for specific groups of staff as required Preparing guidance and training material Perform site inductions for new starters and prepare/issue induction packs Arrange and participate in workplace safety inspections, and ensure that actions arising are followed up and reported to the Safety Committee Participate in and take minutes in LMS safety-related Committees and other meetings Make sure accurate records in relation to all aspects of safety, in particular reports of accidents/incidents and investigations, training records, risk assessments and waste disposal are kept up to date Organise provision of First Aid kit refills Maintain lists of first aiders and fire wardens and posting lists throughout LMS Checking leavers for Home Office Licences, dosimeters, additional duties and contacting Group Heads to make sure licences are transferred, dosimeters are returned, replacements are found Keeping notice boards and intranet pages up to date with relevant H&S information Arrange disposal of chemical waste Radiation Protection: Assist the Health and Safety Manager to arrange personal radiation dosimetry for LMS staff; distribute dosimeters to users, collect when used, and return them with the necessary documentation to the dosimetry service Monitor Radiation rooms Carry out regular spot checks on open sources held in labs to ensure they tally with sources registered in electronic record keeping system, check location of closed sources Arrange maintenance and calibration of radiation monitoring equipment Assist users with ordering and receipt of radioactive substances and keep accurate records using the IsoStock software Organise routine collections of radioactive waste from users and maintain records of radioactive waste disposal Fire Safety (training will be provided): As part of site tours, assess and record laboratory compliance with local fire safety rules Advise scientific staff on implementation of fire safety best practice in laboratory areas The post-holder may also be required to undertake other duties required by the Health & Safety Manager appropriate to the grade.
