Job summary
We are seeking a full time Consultant in Trauma and Orthopaedics with a specialist in Trauma and Hip Arthroplasty.
You will be expected to work closely with the existing 22 Orthopaedic Surgeons (15 T&O and 7 spinal surgeons) to provide a comprehensive Trauma and Orthopaedic Service for the population of Somerset.
The post attracts a total of 11 PAs and includes being on call, for 1 in 12 weekdays and 1 in 10 for weekends, for General Orthopaedic Trauma.
The post is predominately based at Musgrove Park Hospital, Taunton, but the appointee must be prepared to work flexibly off site, in alternative units such as community hospitals in Somerset, Exeter SWAOC, Yeovil and the Taunton Nuffield Hospital.

Please refer to the attached job description for full details of the role and persons specification. You will be expected to perform the following duties:
Orthopaedics and Trauma Services
1. To provide, to a high standard, the full range of specialist diagnosis, treatment and care to inpatients, day case patients and outpatients who need elective Orthopaedic services.
2. To participate on 1:12 weekdays and 1:10 weekends general trauma rota, to carry out a post take ward round of all emergency admissions when on call, lead the post take morning trauma meetings and to provide appropriate follow up in fracture clinics along with new fracture clinic referrals.
Special Interest and Expertise
The post holder will be expected to provide a full range of elective Hip and trauma surgery using both day surgery and in-patient operating lists. The post holder should be fellowship trained in hip arthroplasty and Trauma.
Education and Research
To contribute to the academic life of the Department of Orthopaedics and Trauma continuing the excellent heritage of teaching junior medical staff, medical students and Departmental staff. Undertaking and promoting research initiatives within the Department is actively encouraged.
Clinical Audit
To participate actively in the Department's Clinical Audit programme and contribute to the development of Clinical Quality and reporting at the monthly clinical audit meetings.
Administration
To undertake all necessary administration duties associated with the care of his/her patients. The post holder should work towards implementing Electronic Patient and paperless records, with prompt signing of clinical letters and results on Electronic Patient Record systems.
Management
To be responsible to the Clinical lead for Trauma & Orthopaedics for the effective and efficient use of resources under his/her control.
To contribute to planning the development of Orthopaedics and Trauma Services.
To contribute to main Departmental meetings.
Appraisal/Revalidation
To participate in all required annual updates and mandatory training
To undergo annual appraisal and participate in the revalidation processes as stipulated by the General Medical Council.
MDT
To participate in and develop the MDT including utilising cross site expertise and involvement for example with Yeovil District Hospital.
Person specification
Qualifications
Essential
Full GMC Registration
Entry on the GMC Specialist Register via, CCT (proposed CCT date must be within 6 months of interview date), CESR or European Community Rights
An appropriate equivalent orthopaedic surgical qualification.
Desirable
Fellowship trained in Hip arthroplasty and Trauma
Experience
Essential
Broad trauma and orthopaedic training with evidence of recent experience of all aspects of up-to-date trauma management
Subspecialty interest in Shoulder surgery with evidence of advanced fellowship training
Desirable
Evidence of unsupervised surgical experience in Hip and trauma surgery.

CLINICAL SKILLS:
Understanding of clinical risk management
Competent to work without direct supervision where appropriate
Clear, logical thinking showing an analytical/scientific approach
Ability to mentor staff both medical and nursing
TEACHING:
Evidence of teaching,
Well experienced in postgraduate, particularly multidisciplinary, teaching and training

CLINCAL SKILLS:

Exposure to different groups/teaching methods
