Role: English Teacher
Academy: Outwood Academy Riverside
Start Date: Easter 2025
Salary (Actual Salary): M1 to U3
About the Academy:
Outwood Academy Riverside, founded in September 2020 through the Free Schools Programme, implements the Riverside values program for all students at the start of every academic year. The academy is dedicated to the wide variety of students who enrol, ensuring strong routines and top-notch pastoral care for all pupils.
Located at Russell Street, Middlesbrough, Outwood Academy Riverside is set to have a new school built on Pioneering Way close to Middlesbrough College, with a satellite site in Eston that opened in September 2024.
The department comprises 5 teachers, a specialist literacy teaching assistant, and a one-to-one tutor. It features a combination of experienced staff and recent entrants to the profession, guided by a supportive leader. More experienced teachers will appreciate the clear sense of purpose and organization, while newly-trained colleagues will find it a rewarding place to start their careers in English teaching.
Teaching occurs in classrooms equipped with visualisers, large television screens, and interactive whiteboards. A library with a wide range of fiction supports students’ reading needs and is run by a full-time librarian.
The department has developed a rich KS3 curriculum organized around literary themes and multicultural British experiences in literature, embedding a wide range of poetry in all units for years 7 and 8. Year 9 units connect to Shakespearean characters to broaden students’ literary knowledge.
There is a strong whole-school literacy strategy to ensure all students benefit from reading, including reading in form time, Accelerated Reader, and various interventions for less proficient readers. The specialist literacy teaching assistant uses the Ruth Miskin phonics programme to support emergent readers.
The department prepares students for Eduqas GCSE English Language and English Literature qualifications, with a fully resourced programme of study. We aim to make all our teachers ‘experts’ in preparing students for GCSE examinations, supported by the trust’s team of expert English directors who provide coaching, materials, and collaborative teaching opportunities.
