Purpose of the role:
Bristol Waste Company (BWC) is responsible for refuse and recycling collections, street cleansing and waste disposal for the people of Bristol. We also run the city’s Household Reuse and Recycling Centres (HRRCs) and a growing commercial waste business. We are an enthusiastic, forward-thinking company with an ambitious vision for Bristol. We aim to involve and empower citizens, community groups and businesses so that, together, we can make Bristol a cleaner and greener place. Since our founding, reuse has been a key part of our vision. Our reuse team operate three reuse shops at our HRRCs, with the donations from the public, and after a checking process of the items we put them back into use.
We now have an exciting opportunity to join the reuse team and manage one of our shops. Reuse aims to create a welcoming space that gives people easy, affordable ways to address the climate, ecological and cost of living crises. The post holder will be part of this innovative project, which allows BWC to promote reuse to a new, wider audience, and help support the shift to a circular economy.
As the Reuse Shop Manager, you will be responsible for running all aspects of our exciting stores. You will be responsible for maximising sales, managing Shop Assistants and volunteers, providing excellent customer service and creating an inspiring, engaging and informative shopping experience. In addition, you will be engaged with promoting the waste hierarchy, reuse in general and the wider work of BWC.
A basic DBS will be required for this position.
Key Responsibilities:
Shop Management
* Liaise with the Contract Manager and other key contacts regarding day-to-day activities and responsibilities for the site.
* Ensure the shop is operational during opening hours.
* Ensure the shop is organised and walkways and fire exits are always kept clear.
* Create engaging, creative merchandising and window displays.
* Ensure stock, cash and equipment is kept secure and record any losses.
* Maintain high standards of housekeeping throughout the shop.
* Manage the processing of items, including checking, testing where applicable and presenting for sale.
* Oversee the agreed stock rotation system, regularly updating and replacing stock.
* Ensure high value stock items are identified at BWC donation points and transferred to the shop.
* Manage back-room processes including storage of stock, transfer of stock from other reuse locations and appropriate disposal of items, where appropriate.
* Operate a pricing strategy to maximise profits from the sale of items.
* Follow all SHEQ and financial policies and procedures to make sure the shop is safe and secure for all staff, volunteers and visitors.
* Create a welcoming, inclusive atmosphere for customers, the shop team and other visitors.
* Support all staff and volunteers to always provide excellent customer service.
Sales and finance
* Achieve budgeted sales targets and maximise profit.
* Follow agreed cash handling procedures.
* Monitor sales and keep accurate records of cash taken.
* Track and pay volunteer hours expenses through agreed company procedure.
* Recruit, train and manage a team of volunteers, adhering to all volunteering policies and procedures.
* Co-ordinate rotas to make sure the shop is adequately staffed.
* Motivate volunteers and share key information and updates to ensure they feel valued and part of the wider business.
Essential Requirements for the Role:
* Motivated experience of managing a team.
* Experience delivering and managing excellent customer service.
* Experience working in a retail environment.
* Management and delegation skills.
* Ability to work autonomously and act on own initiative.
* A solution-focused approach.
* Experience in using Microsoft Word and Excel.
* Experience of Health & Safety awareness.
