Interim, Part-Time Head of Estates at a Prestigious East of England-Based College
Are you an experienced estates professional looking for a leadership role in a prestigious East of England-based college? We are currently seeking a highly skilled and strategic Interim Head of Estates to oversee the management, development, and sustainability of our estate on a part-time basis. This interim role provides an exciting opportunity to make a significant impact while the College recruits for a permanent appointment.
About the Role
As the Interim Head of Estates, you will be responsible for the strategic planning and operational management of the College's buildings, grounds, and facilities during the transition period. Your role will ensure that the estate remains safe, sustainable, and well-maintained, supporting an exceptional environment for students, staff, and visitors. You will will lead a multidisciplinary team, including the Project Manager (Major Projects), Maintenance Manager, Head Gardener, and Compliance Coordinator.
Key Responsibilities
Develop and implement a short-term Estates Strategy aligned with the College's goals, ensuring a seamless transition until the permanent role is filled.
Manage ongoing capital projects and major refurbishments, ensuring delivery on time, within budget, and to the highest standards.
Oversee planned and reactive maintenance of College buildings and facilities.
Ensure full compliance with health and safety, building regulations, and environmental sustainability requirements.
Provide financial oversight, managing budgets effectively for both capital and operational expenditure.
Lead a team of estates professionals, fostering a culture of excellence and collaboration.
Ensure the continued upkeep and maintenance of the College's beautiful gardens and grounds.
Support the College's sustainability agenda, including energy efficiency and environmental initiatives.
Act as the key contact for regulatory bodies, auditors, and stakeholders.About You
To succeed in this role, you will have proven experience in estates management, ideally within higher education, heritage, or similar environments, including working with listed buildings and conservation projects.
You will demonstrate strong leadership skills and experience managing multi-disciplinary teams. Budget management, project planning, and contractor coordination experience are essential, as is knowledge of health and safety legislation, building regulations, and sustainability practices. Relevant professional qualifications (such as RICS, IWFM, or an equivalent FM qualification) are also highly desirable.
Additionally, excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage effectively with stakeholders at all levels, are essential. Strong IT skills, including proficiency with spreadsheets and planned maintenance systems, will also be required.
