The post holder will hold and maintain professional registration with the Health Professions Council (HCPC) as a Biomedical Scientist (BMS). They will fulfil their dissection duties in accordance with RCPath guidelines and will be required to perform dissection of histological tissue samples, under the supervision of a Consultant Pathologist. Because they will be learning to undertake dissection duties under local agreement, it is essential the post holder develops and maintains continuing competence through a system of ongoing review overseen by Consultant Histopathologists.

Main duties of the job
* The post holder will be required to perform dissection of histological tissue samples, under the supervision of a Consultant Pathologist, which will include specimens of varying complexity most of which require a high degree knowledge, skill and experience.
* Provides backfill cover for Consultant Histopathologists in specimen dissection activities as necessary and appropriate. Recommends additional tests, where required, to expedite the diagnostic process and provides clinically relevant scientific advice.
* The post holder will exercise autonomy within professional and managerial boundaries and will be required to verify and validate completed work.

Person Specification
Qualifications
* HCPC registration as Biomedical Scientist
* MSc in Biomedical Science, IBMS Higher specialist diploma or Fellowship of IBMS
* Evidence that qualifications and IBMS membership status meet the acceptance criteria to undertake IBMS Diploma of Expert Practice in Histological Dissection
* IBMS certificates of Extended or Expert practice
Experience
* Experience undertaking BMS sample transfer
* Clear evidence of relevant continued professional development (CPD) activity (for own benefit and as an example to junior staff)
Knowledge
* Sound understanding of histopathology and anatomy
* Strong understanding of histology laboratory technique
* An awareness of RCPath guidelines for specimen dissection
* Understanding of H&S requirements in laboratory
* Understanding of ISO 15189 standard for laboratory accreditation
Skills
* High level of manual dexterity and good hand-eye coordination
* Ability to organise own work and to do so under pressure.
* Able to manage and prioritise the work of the dissection room.
* Excellent communications skills
* Excellent supervisory and teaching ability.
* Basic IT literacy
* Proficient use of Pathology computer system
* Proficient in Microsoft word, excel and outlook
