Your team responsibilities
We are looking for a Carbon Markets Policy Analyst to join our Carbon Markets Policy & Guidance team. The team tracks organisations and governments seeking to shape private sector responses to climate change and the development of the carbon credit market on the path to net zero. This vacancy is for a researcher to join our team to support our products on national and international carbon market policy.
About the role:
This role will play a key part in the continued development of MSCI Carbon Markets policy analysis, with a particular focus on the Asia-Pacific region. The Carbon Markets Policy Analyst will also be heavily involved in collating qualitative and quantitative data to track organisations, investors and governments seeking to shape corporate responses to climate change and the use of carbon credits.
Key to success in this role will be the ability to generate clear and concise insights from disparate sources of information, emerging or fast-moving policy areas, and complex standards, reports, and regulations.
The role can be based in London, São Paulo, or any of MSCI’s offices in the Asia-Pacific region.
Your key responsibilities
Successful candidates will have research, advisory or public policy experience relating to climate policy, carbon markets, or corporate climate strategies. This may have been gained through experience with research firms, governments, consultancy, corporate or investor sustainability teams, think tanks, NGOs, or academia.
Candidates should have a strong team ethic, excellent written communications skills, and be capable of extracting insights and communicating them with clarity to senior-level audiences.
Responsibilities will include:
1. Analysis of national and subnational climate and carbon market policy in a range of countries, including conducting interviews and preparing country profiles.
2. Tracking developments in international policy and standards relating to climate change, net zero and the voluntary carbon market.
3. Qualitative and quantitative research across the policy areas covered by the team.
4. Communicating insights internally and externally, delivered to clients through meetings, conferences, webinars, monthly reporting, an online platform and other research projects.
Your skills and experience that will help you excel
1. Undergraduate and/or post-graduate degree in Environmental Studies, Climate Change, Geography, or a related field.
2. Professional experience working in the public, private, financial or NGO sectors relating to climate change, net zero, carbon markets or similar.
3. Experience with national climate policy or international climate negotiations is particularly welcomed.
4. Proven responsibility for delivering reports, briefings, or other outputs.
5. Knowledge across various climate policy issues, with the ability to extract insights and communicate complex issues to senior-level audiences.
6. Excellent English-language communication, writing and presentation skills to clearly articulate ideas and facilitate strong relations with a global team of carbon and climate research analysts, technology and operations teams.
7. Other language skills of relevance to the Asia-Pacific region would be a major asset in this role.
8. Demonstrable enthusiasm for addressing climate change in the corporate and financial sectors.
This role is for you if you are:
1. Aware of what a carbon credit is and actively interested in the policy discussions and debates around carbon markets.
2. Inquisitive, analytical, and naturally inclined to ask, ‘But what does this mean?’, ‘So what?’ and ‘What happens next?’
3. Comfortable both writing a 50-page report and trying to summarise a new policy development in a sentence.
4. Collaborate generously with your teammates but effective at working independently.
5. Passionate and pragmatic about how the world can reach net zero.
