Senior Technical Officer for the Magan Centre of Applied Mycology
Fixed Term Contract until 31 July 2029
Full time starting salary is normally in the range of £37,337 per annum
Location: Cranfield, Bedfordshire
We are inviting applicants passionate about analytical chemistry to join our new Magan Centre of Applied Mycology as a Senior Technical Officer.
About the Role
The Applied Mycology Group recently secured funding for the creation of the Magan Centre of Applied Mycology (MCAM) expected to grow from four staff to 36 by 2031-32. Your role will be to manage and operate key analytical equipment within MCAM ensuring the effective execution of various analyses that support research and teaching activities.
About You
You will have a degree qualification in the relevant scientific discipline or equivalent significant experience, in-depth technical know-how in the relevant scientific area gained over a significant number of years. You will require expertise in methods for decontaminating work surfaces, equipment, and waste materials, including the use of autoclaves, chemical disinfectants. You will be proficient in the use of microscopes to study fungal structures and chromatography, mass spectrometry for targeted and untargeted analysis for quantification and characterisation of compounds of interest. You will possess skills in DNA extraction, PCR, gel electrophoresis, and bioinformatics tools for fungal identification.
Ability to prioritise tasks, work under pressure and to strict deadlines to meet key milestones whilst ensuring excellent verbal, written communication and interpersonal skills.

The project will be part of the Environment and Agrifood Theme, one of eight themes at Cranfield University offering world-class and niche post-graduate level research, education, training and consultancy. The MCAM will aim to expand the Applied Mycology Group's expertise beyond food and expand to the other Themes at Cranfield.
