Summary
The Registered Nurse is responsible for nursing care and maintaining a safe abuse-free environment for all residents throughout all Orchards campuses.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
* Assess reports and maintains accurate documentation regarding resident conditions. Must be able to recognize significant changes in the conditions of residents. Completes assessments as required based on level of care. Responsible for notification to physician and families/responsible party regarding changes.
* Responsible for oversight of care provided on the nursing units by licensed practical nurses, nursing assistants, and restorative aides. Immediately reports substandard care to Director of Nursing.
* Daily rounds on unit and with physician as needed to ensure coordination of resident care and timely completion of documentation.
* Completion and verification of monthly physician orders.
* Evaluates functions of unit to ensure resident care, staff relations, and efficiency of service. Reports any and all concerns to the Director of Nursing. Assures nursing practice is in compliance with Nurse Practice Act, state and federal regulations, and facilities policies and procedures.
* Communicates with staff, ancillary departments, Home Care Providers, and family members to discuss issues related to the resident’s condition of care.
Other Responsibilities
* Initiates immediate intervention in abusive situations to protect the resident and report allegations according to facility policy. Will assist with the investigation process when needed.
* Receives and provides change of shift report regarding resident status and changes in condition via usage of 24 hours report and verbally.
* Responsible to assist with administration of medications and treatments as prescribed by the physician. Orders medications on a routine and as needed basis. Maintains accurate controlled substance count.
* Participates in Mandatory nursing in-services and committee meetings as required.
* Identifies areas of staff training required to provide quality care and notifies Director of Nursing immediately.
Supervisory Responsibilities
Directly supervises Care Supervisors. Responsibilities include planning, assigning, and directing work, participating in appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
Qualifications

Education and/or Experience
Graduate of an accredited school of nursing and successful passing of registered nursing licensure exam. Complete annual state-mandated training requirements (Regular In-services as well as any external training).
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations
Current Registered Nurse license in West Virginia required with 12 continuing education hours required annually; First Aid and CPR certification, IV certification preferred. Each requires periodic renewal through re-certification or continuing education.
Other Skills and Abilities
Nursing skills specific to geriatric residents are needed. May need additional skills with special-need geriatric residents such as those with dementia, Alzheimer's or those requiring advanced health care. Ability to use lift equipment.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear when communicating with residents, family members, The Orchards at Foxcrest staff, and outside business contacts. The employee is frequently required to stand while conversing with various individuals, preparing medications at the medicine cart, and administering medications to the residents; walk throughout the unit; sit at a desk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel when preparing medications, using syringes and the telephone or computer, and attending to the physical needs of the resident; and reach with hands and arms when obtaining supplies, dispensing medications, and attending to resident needs.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts with resident equipment and medicine carts, and to fumes from medicated creams and cleaning products. The employee is frequently exposed to airborne viruses and bacteria, as well as blood-borne, fecal-borne, and other bodily pathogens carried by residents.
