It’s an exciting time to join us. We're searching for people-focused digital, data and technology experts to join our new team, focused on improving services for our residents and making our borough truly digital.
We are hiring a range of developers and welcome applications from those who identify as front-end, back-end or full-stack developers.
The Role
We are looking for a senior developer to join our team.
If you are successful in applying for this role, you’ll be working with several different software stacks. Some of the key technologies you’ll be working with are:
* AWS
* Docker
* LAMP stacks
* Local Gov Drupal and other PHP-based CMSes
Across one or more products in development at discovery, alpha or beta stage, you will:
* Build web and mobile web-based products and services to serve user needs.
* Design, build, and maintain efficient, reusable, and reliable code.
* Help set software development standards and ensure they’re adhered to; defining high-quality services and service support.
* Identify performance bottlenecks and bugs, and devise solutions to these problems.
* Help maintain code quality, organization and automation.
* Lead and mentor junior members of the development team.
* Work across multiple product teams concurrently.
What You’ll Do
* Implement software development standards and practices for the council.
* Use open-source, cloud-based, loosely-coupled technologies to ensure our technology remains nimble and easily iterated upon.
* Monitor performance against technology standards for the council, including software development standards and practices; architectural standards and designs; devops practices and culture.
* Ensure that all software you build, maintain and run passes the GDS service standard or equivalent peer review.
* Take responsibility for ensuring our services don’t become stale, continuously iterating in live.
* Work with services to help them improve their technology systems, even when we haven’t built them.
* Use test-driven development or similar methods to ensure our services are of a high standard from day one.
Who You Are
We want to hear from people with skills in:
* Building, supporting and continuously iterating software.
* Cloud infrastructure; data centres; applications and components.
* Leading a development team within wider multidisciplinary user-centred Agile teams.
* Collaborative prototyping with user researchers, service designers, and content designers.
* Pair-programming and mentoring of junior developers.
You Should Be
We are looking for people who share our values and principles:
* naturally curious – you keep on top of your own learning and development and are up to date with the latest techniques and trends in your field.
* an advocate for user-centered practices, embedded within agile delivery.
* able to explain complex technical concepts in plain language.
* committed to improving residents’ lives and opportunities.
* demonstrating respect and fairness.
* taking ownership.
* doing things better.
* working together across the council.
These values are incredibly important to us, as is building an environment that promotes knowledge, empathy, equality, and skill sharing.
What we offer
* 28 days’ annual leave.
* Flexible and partly remote working arrangements.
* Mental health support, including an external counselling service.
* Long service awards.
* Learning and development opportunities, including apprenticeships.
* Staff networks for mental health, LGBTQ+ support, racial equality, and more.
* Vouchers for free eye tests.
* Annual season ticket loans.
* Cycle to work scheme.
